    Kondana Caves

The Kondana Caves are located in Karjat. They give a peek into the ancient lifestyle that the Buddhists followed. These ancient rock-cut caves encompass several sculptures, Stupas, Viharas and Chaityas. These caves date back to the 2nd century, making them almost 2000 years old.

The sculptures and Stupas are representatives of the Buddhist architecture that was adopted in those times. The carvings inside the caves depict varied dancing poses of men and women. Unfortunately, a major natural disaster in the form of an earthquake ruined the entrance, floors and several Stupas of these caves.

Annually, these medieval-era caves are thronged by plenty of Buddhist devotees. Drinking alcohol and smoking is strictly prohibited to maintain the sanctity of the holy shrine.

    Peth Fort

The Peth Fort, also referred to as Kotligad, is a major tourist attraction situated near Karjat in the small village of Peth. The Peth hill offers a panoramic view of the entire region, as it is aptly placed in the backdrop of Matheran. The entire stretch of the Konkan countryside can be viewed from here.

Close to the fort lies a holy idol of Lord Bhairoba, enshrined in a tiny little cave. The Peth Fort is presently in ruins; however, the water cisterns in the proximity are still intact. History has it that the fort was constructed by the mighty Maratha rulers to defend their kingdom from their enemies.

The Nethersole Dam and the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary are two other tourist hotspots found in the vicinity.
