Kargil has both arctic and desert type climatic conditions owing to its geographical locations. Located in the Himalayan ranges, the place experiences heavy snowfall during winters and as a result most of the routes remain closed during this time. The winters in Kargil are freezing and harsh with temperatures dipping to -48� C. However, the place remains warm during the summer season while rainfall is negligible. Annual precipitation is basically in the form of snow which is very low.
(April to September): Even though the climate of Kargil becomes quite warm during the summer season, woollen clothes are still required. The maximum temperature recorded is around 38� C. Travellers prefer visiting Kargil during this time because of favourable climatic conditions.
(October to March): Kargil experiences extremely uncomfortable and unbearably cold winters with mercury going down to as low as -48℃. During winters the place receives heavy snowfall that results in route jams. Visitors avoid coming here during winters because of harsh climatic conditions.
