Kanchenjunga is the world's third highest mountain. It is located at the India-Nepal border in the Himalayas at an altitude of 8586 m above sea level. Kanchenjunga literally means “The Five Treasures of Snows”. It consists of 5 tall peaks of which each is a divine repository of gold, silver, gems, grain and holy books.

There are 5 peaks that constitute Kanchenjunga among which three peaks – the main, central and the south share the borders with the North Sikkim of India and the Taplejung District of Nepal. The other two peaks are completely in Nepal.

However, the Kanchenjunga region has 12 more peaks that are around 23,000 ft high. The landscape of Kanchenjunga is shared by Bhutan, China, India and Nepal and it has 14 protected areas which sum up to 2329 sq mt. It is home to a large variety of rhododendrons and orchids and many endangered species like snow leopard, Asiatic black bear, Himalayan musk deer, red panda, blood pheasant and chestnut-breasted patridge.

History

Kanchenjunga has an interesting history. Till the year 1852 Kanchenjunga was considered as the highest peak of the world. After the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1849, Mt. Everest was declared the highest mountain based on various readings and measurements. Kanchenjunga was officially moved to the third place in 1856.

Tourism

Kanchenjunga is known all over the world for its breath taking views from Darjeeling. As permission to trek up the hill range is very rarely given, the peaks haven't lost their pristine beauty. It is also known for assuming different colours during different times of the day. The Darjeeling War Memorial gives amazing views of the Kanchenjunga range.

A clear day makes you feel that the mountains are just the image of a white wall hanging from the sky. It is considered as a sacred mountain by the natives of Sikkim. Among the trekking trails that are open to trekkers, the Goecha La trek and the trek to the Green Lake Basin are slowly gaining popularity.
