Kalsi Attractions - Tourist Places To Visit In Kalsi

Asan Barrage is located near the meeting point of two rivers, namely Asan and Yamuna. The barrage has an artificial wetland spread over an area of 4 sq km, which is fed by the Asan River. When the water level goes down, some muddy islands can also be seen in the wetland.

The birds seen here are listed as endangered species by IUCN Red Data Book (The International Union for the Conservation of Nature). Visitors can see birds like mallards, red-crested pochards, ruddy shelducks, coots, cormorants, egrets, wagtails, pond herons, Pallas fishing eagles, marsh harriers, greater spotted eagles, osprey, and steppe eagles in the site.

During the winter season, various trans-Himalayan migratory birds take rest here on their way to South India. In the end of October, travellers can see migratory birds from the Pale arctic region. The period from the month of October to November and February to March, are the best months to visit.

This site is a nesting place for Pallas Fishing Eagle for last 30 years. The site offers a rare opportunity to observe 90% of total waterbirds including 11 species of migratory bird during the winter season. Some of them are Brahminy ducks, pintails, gadwalls, common pochards, wigeons, common teals, tufted ducks, and shovellers.

 The period from the month of May to September is also considered as an ideal season to see birds like painted storks, open billed storks, and night herons here.

Dak Pathar is a serene picnic spot located on the Dehradun-Chakrata road. There is a hydroelectric power plant located at this place. Various water sports like canoeing, boating, water skiing, and sailing can be enjoyed here.

Tourists can go for swimming with trained swimmers on the swimming pool located in the GMVN rest house. The beautiful Yamuna Valley can be seen from this place.

 Katta Pathar is a small village bordered by the Chakrata Hills and the Yamuna River. The name of the village is derived from an iron mine, which is on the verge of extinction.

Ashokan Rock Edict is an engraved rock located in Kalsi. According to records, Asoka, the Mauryan King carved his fourteenth edict on this rock; the edict basically is a compilation of the King’s suggested reforms and advice.

This rock was discovered by John Forest in the year 1860. The description is written in the Prakrit language and the script used is Brahmi. This is an important memorial in Indian epigraphy and has dimensions as 10 ft x 10ft x 8ft. The rock is engraved with an elephant’s outline where the word ‘gajatam’ is written between its two legs.

The names of five Greek kings, namely Antiochus, Magus, Antigonus, Ptolemy, and Alexander engraved on the rock suggest that the edict can be dated back to 253 BC.
