Jamshedpur, also known as the Industrial City of India was founded by the late Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata. It is the most populous city in the state of Jharkhand and is popularly known as the Steel City or Tatanagar. Jamshedpur is the headquarters of East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand and is the third largest city in East India after Kolkata and Patna.

It is home to one of the largest industrial zones of India known as Adityapur which boasts of more than 1,000 small and medium scale industries.

Tourist Places In And Around Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur has also started to attract tourists. The benefit of being near a hill and forest range serves as a major tourist point for all the further destinations. Some of the major tourist attractions of the city are Jubilee Park, which was a gift by Tata Steel to the citizens of Jamshedpur on the completion of its 50 years. The park is known for its beautiful display of lights on March 3, which is observed as Founder’s Day.

Dimna Lake is an artificial reservoir and one of the main sources for the city's drinking water. The Lake has fun filled activities for tourists like jet skiing, rowing and water scooting. The other important places of interest include Tata Steel Zoological Park, Chandil dam, Rivers Meet, Hudco Lake, Centre for Excellence (CE), Bhatia Park, Moolgaokar Park, Bhuvneswari temple and others.

A small town named Ghatsila which is famous for its scenic beauty is some 40 km from the city.

History

Jamshedpur was earlier known as Sakchi and it was in 1918 that Sakchi was renamed to Jamshedpur in tribute to its founder Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata. It was believed that at the turn of nineteenth century, Jamshedji Tata had gone to Pittsburgh and asked the geologist to help him find a site to build his dream which was India's first Steel Company.

It took nearly three years to find a suitable land which was rich in natural resources. The land was finally found and called Sakchi, now part of Tatanagar, on the densely forested stretches of the Chhota Nagpur plateau.

Geography

Jamshedpur is situated in the southern end of the state of Jharkhand and is bordered with the states of Orissa and West Bengal. The city is located at the confluence of Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers. The two rivers are the major sources of drinking water and ground water for the city.

Jamshedpur is also primarily located in a hilly region and is surrounded by the Dalma Hills running from west to east and covered with dense forests.

The ideal time to visit Jamshedpur is between October and March. October has a pleasing weather which makes it ideal for sightseeing.

    Jamshedpur is connected to other parts of India by National and State Highways. The major highways are National Highway 33 which connects to Mumbai,and Delhi. The National Highway 6 connects to Kharagpur and Kolkata. For local transport, commuters have the options of bus and auto rikshaw. It is a popular mode of transport among commuters.

    Jamshedpur, also known as Tatanagar Railway Station is the most important junction of the state and is the second busiest station of South Eastern Railway after Howrah. The other important stations are Adityapur, Gamharia, Kandra, Govindpur and Salgajhari.
