Another reason why travelling during the monsoon is a good idea is that not many people are comfortable stepping out in the rain, so you will see a smaller crowd wherever you go. This also means you will have all the time to leisurely explore places, that too at a cheaper rate - because it's an off-season for travel.

With the incessant rains, the water bodies are in their full glory. Visiting waterfalls, lakes and dams in the rains will altogether cause a different level of thrill. We are listing out some of the dams in Maharashtra that you must visit, especially during the monsoons. 1. Koyna Dam

Built on the Koyna river in Koynanagar of Satara district, the Koyna Dam is the largest dams in Maharashtra. Koyna Nagar sits cosily in the Western Ghats and therefore, is surrounded with refreshing views. During the monsoon, especially, the place looks very beautiful.

One can reach Chiplun by bus or train and hire a taxi from there. Koyna Dam is located 42 km from Chiplun. Self-drive is a good option, however, you need to drive very cautiously on the curvy and tricky roads.

2. Jayakwadi Dam

Constructed on the Godavari river, Jayakwadi Dam is located at Paithan in Aurangabad. It is one of the largest earthen dams in Asia. The Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary located nearby is home to several resident as well as migratory birds and is a haven for birdwatchers.

The best way to reach Jayakwadi is via Aurangabad, which is a major town and is well connected with the rest of the state. Reach Aurangabad by bus, train or flight and hire a taxi from here to reach Jayakwadi Dam, which is located at a distance of about 52 km away.

3. Mulshi Dam

Surrounded by lush thickets and verdant hills of the Western Ghats, Mulshi Dam is located just a couple of hours drive away from Pune. Built on the Mula river, the Mulshi Dam is a popular tourist destination, especially during and post-monsoon months.

Mulshi Dam is best reached via road from Pune, which is a major city of Maharashtra. The distance between Mulshi Dam and Pune is about 40 km.

4. Wilson Dam

Popularly known as the Bhandardara Dam, Wilson Dam is located near the charming hill station of Bhandardara in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Built across the Pravara river, the Wilson Dam is one of the oldest dams in the country. The entire region is blessed with abundant natural beauty. The highest peak of Maharashtra is also located in Bhandardara.

The best way to reach Bhandardara is via road from either Mumbai or Pune. Bhandardara is located at a distance of about 163 km and 172 km from Mumbai and Pune respectively. Another option is to board a train from Mumbai or Pune to Igatpuri and hire a taxi to Bhandardara, which is 44 km away from here.

5. Pavana Dam

Pavana Dam is constructed over the Pavana river and is located in the village of Pavananagar. This tiny village is somewhere between the incredible landscapes and nondescript village that fall between Mumbai and Pune. The dam is closer to Lonavala and can be easily reached via Mumbai or Pune by road or rail.

Distance from Mumbai to Pavana Dam is about 108 km, from Pune it is around 45 km and from Lonavala, it is 20 km. The dam is surrounded by a number of hills, lakes, waterfalls and trekking spots, making it a spectacular place to visit, especially during the monsoons.
