Chennakeshava Temple is said to be built during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 AD.

Architecture of Chennakeshava Temple
The Chennakeshava Temple complex comprises of three important temples: Chennakeshava Temple (main temple), Kappe Chennigaraya Temple and Ranganayaki (Andal) Temple. There are two temple pillars (Garuda Stambha and Deepa Stambha) within the temple complex. The entrance has a Rajagopura (tower) which was built during the Vijayanagara Empire rule.

Design
The Chennakeshava Temple has an ekakuta vimana (single shrine) with three entrance doors. The shrine has a large vestibule that connects to the main hall (mantapa). Each of the entrances have the statues of doorkeepers (dwarapalakas). Overall, the temple is built using soapstone.

Sculptures
The sculptures and carvings are the most important attractions at Chennakeshava Temple. Various scenes belonging to Hindu mythologies like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata have been carved on the temple walls. There are various inscriptions and sculptures found in the Chennakeshava Temple.

The Chennakeshava Temple is located around 40 km from Hassan. It is about 220 km from Bangalore to Belur.
By Bus: State Transport buses are available from all major cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Hassan, etc., to reach Belur.
