Telangana is located in the Southern part of India, sharing its northern border with Maharashtra and Karnataka. Telangana Formation Day celebrates the day when the state of Telangana was formed from the state of Andhra Pradesh. It was on June 2nd, 2014 that Telangana was formed and Hyderabad became its capital.

The movement for separate statehood for Telangana started in the early years of the 20th century. On February 18, 1953, the States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) recommended that Hyderabad State be divided into two states - one comprising Marathwada and the other comprising Telangana districts. However, this recommendation was not implemented because of opposition from Telangana leaders like Potti Sriramulu who demanded greater autonomy for Telangana within Andhra Pradesh. The formation of Telangana has been a long-standing demand for several decades by people living in this region because they felt neglected by the government and wanted their own identity as a separate state.

The date chosen for celebrating this day is June 2nd, 2014 which was when the Indian Parliament passed an amendment bill giving birth to a new state - Telangana. The bill received President Pranab Mukherjee's assent on June 2nd evening at around 5 pm after which it was published in newspapers as an official announcement of its existence as an independent state.
