Dispur is the capital of Assam and is located about 10 km from the fast growing commercial city of Guwahati. Before Dispur, Shillong was the capital of Assam. In 1973, when Meghalaya was carved from Assam, Shillong remained the capital of Meghalaya. This is when the government of Assam chose Dispur as its capital.

The major government buildings like the Assam Secretariat and the Assam Assembly House are located in Dispur. It also has a few places of tourist importance like the Shilpagram and the Vashistha Ashram. Dispur is also known for its tea auction markets. Though it is the capital city, Dispur still remains under the shadow of its neighbouring city Guwahati.
The inhabitants of Dispur include people of Aryan, Tibetan and Burman origin. They strongly believe in their culture and heritage. Festivals like Bihu are celebrated here with great grandeur. Though Assamese is the official language of the city, English and Hindi are also not uncommon.
