    Dimapur Ao Baptist Church

    Located in the heart of Dimapur is the Dimapur Ao Baptist Church which is a must visit for anyone coming to this place. The church is a congregation of 5000 Ao families in and around Dimapur and has 15000 baptized members making it the largest Baptist Church in India.

    The church is large enough to house a congregation of around 10,000 members at any point of time. A Sunday Mass at this church is a sight to see when the followers come dressed in traditional and formal attire. The half a century old Church is an architectural masterpiece standing tall and delivering the message of serenity, peace and brotherhood.

    From a humble beginning in 1958 by two Ao families, the church has grown to becoming an institution serving the poor and the needy and spreading God’s message. Every year during Christmas the church is decorated with lights which add to its grandeur.

  • 02Nagaland Science Centre

    The Nagaland Science Centre promotes the idea ‘discover science in action’ through its innovation and noble theme park. The science centre was started by the state government as an initiative to make science interesting, playful and informal.

    There are different galleries in the Nagaland Science Centre, and each one of them have equipment based on themes. For example, there are galleries called ‘Our Senses’, Children’s Corner’ ‘Fun Science’ etc. the science centre also has a planetarium which spectacularly displays the night sky.

    Taramandal is another popular place in the Centre which has a unique inflatable dome. The open space science park is equipped with scientific play materials. These materials are fun to handle yet teach scientific concepts in simplistic and easy manner.

    The centre is opened everyday (except Mondays) from 10 am to 4 pm. Tourists can spend an entire day exploring the various galleries and equipment of the Nagaland Science Centre.

  • 03Zoological Park

    Without getting a sense of the flora and fauna of a place, a visit to a new place can be quite incomplete. In Dimapur, the Zoological Park reconnects people to Nature and also educates about the rich flora and fauna of the state and the north eastern region at large.

    The park serves as a recreational spot and an educational hub. The Zoological Park of Dimapur is located 6 km from the city centre covering a total area of 176 hectares or 434.90 acres. The park is located on a plateau and has low lying areas ideal for aquatic birds.

    The state government inaugurated the Zoological Park on the 28th August, 2008 with the mission to educate the people of the state about the rich natural abundance. The Zoological Park also serves as a Conservation Centre of the state as well as the entire Northeastern region.

  • 04Medziphema

    Medziphema

    Medziphema is one of the popular tourist attractions near Dimapur. It is a sub-division of the Dimapur district. Previously, Medziphema was known as ‘Ghaspani’ which means ‘water from the plant’. Medziphema is placed in a beautiful location, and it lies neither on the hills nor the valleys. Medziphema is situated just 360 m above sea level.

    Medziphema is very close to both Dimapur and Kohima, and it is its strategic location that makes it popular. It is just 33 km from Dimapur and 44 km from Kohima. Medziphema is popular because of the School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) and Nagaland University, Medziphema campus. These two institutions are considered to be the hall mark of the town.

    The Medziphema town is surrounded by several villages such as Aoyimkum, Aoyimti and Darogarjan. Medziphema’s pineapples are also very famous, and the villages close to the town are known as pineapple villages.

  • 05Diezephe Craft Village

    As the name suggests, the Diezephe Craft Village is a handicrafts and handloom village. The Tenyimei community is the primary inhabitants of the village who are known for their excellent craftsmanship. The craft village is popular for its deft woodcarving, bamboo work and other forms of handicrafts and handloom.

    Diezephe Craft Village is located 13 km from Dimapur and is well-connected by tourist taxis and state transport buses. Here, not only are the artworks displayed, but the process of making them are also openly shown to the tourists.

    The craft village is managed by the Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited. It is under their guidance that the villagers have been able to excel in their expertise and have been able to promote their art to the world. Regular workshops are also organised in the Diezephe Craft Village for the local weavers and for people from across the region.

  • 06Green Park

    Green Park is an idyllic recreational spot in Dimapur where nature has abundantly blessed the surroundings. It is a pleasant place to hang out and has a good time with family and friends. The name, Green Park itself signifies that the place is full of greenery and thus the place doesn’t disappoint in any manner.

    The Green Park is located within the premises of the state Horticulture Nursery and is maintained by the state government. There are lots you can do in the park such as enjoy boating in the lake within the park, have a leisured lunch in the open shaded grounds or even enjoy a sumptuous meal in the restaurant.

    The park is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and on national holidays. There is a nominal fee to enter the park. The park can also be booked for private parties on the days the park isn’t open for public.

  • 07Shiv Mandir

    Shiv Mandir

    There is an interesting story of how the Shiv Mandir came into being here in Dimapur. In the year 1961, a villager from Singrijan had gone to the Rangapahar Forest Reserve where he used a big stone to sharpen his knife (dao).

    While he was sharpening the knife, some liquid-like substance oozed out of the stone. The same night he dreamt that the stone was Lord Shiva, who appeared as a saint in his dreams. He kept having the same dream many times and ultimately he informed the villagers about his dream. The villagers along with the priest and learned men went to the site and confirmed that the stone was indeed a Shiva Lingam.

    Though initially they found the stone lying and much to their surprise couldn’t make it stand. After much prayer and offerings the stone finally was made to stand. Since then the stone has become a major place of worship in Singrijan.

    Chumukedima Village

    Several waterfalls adorn the beautiful hills of the Chumukedima village, an ancient village near Dimapur which is now being promoted as a must-visit tourist attraction. Located 14 km from Dimapur city, Chumukedima village lies on the foothills of the Naga Hills.

    Chumukedima had served as the first headquarters of the then Naga Hills District under the British rule in the early 19th Century. The tourism department of Nagaland, with the idea of promoting the area has created a tourist village on top of the hill from where the entire city of Dimapur and some parts of Karbi-Anglong district can be clearly seen. It is located 8 km away from the National Highway.

    The government is also keen to form a Dimapur- Chumukedima urban area considering the rate of growth of the area. It has been seen that the place has grown nearly five times in the last 20 years.

  • 09Kachari Ruins

    Archeologists have proven that Dimapur was an ancient capital of the Kachari kingdom. It is one of the important sites of the megalithic age. The place where the remains of the kingdom can be found is known as the Kachari Ruins, a must visit destination in Dimapur.

    The ruins also have evidences of the Ahom invasion into the territory during the 13th century. The Kachari Ruins is a goldmine for the historian as the place has clues of how people lived here so many centuries back. The ruins also have evidences that the Kacharis had a strong Hindu influence, though pre-dominantly they were non-Aryans.

     Among the most famous Kachari Ruins stands the monolith. Apart from the monolith, there are many ruins of temples, tanks and embankments in this place. The scattered stone blocks with various designs are also found all around. The place has been well maintained and preserved today.

    A holiday without shopping can never be a satisfying or a fulfilling trip. Dimapur doesn’t disappoint tourist as a shopping destination too. Ruzaphema is a shopping paradise especially for people looking for traditional artefacts of the Nagas.

    Located 5 km from Kohima on the Dimapur-Kohima Road, Ruzaphema has a lot stored in its small gullies and bye-lanes. The colourful streets are filled with the essence of Naga culture. The exquisite collection of traditional Naga attire, shawls and other accessories fill the bazaar.

    Interestingly, most of the things found in Ruzaphema are produced by the booming cottage and handicrafts industry of the state mainly sustained by the women. Apart from the bazaar and its colourful characteristics, Ruzaphema also has evidence of the Kachari kingdom.

    The remains are mainly in ruins but are nevertheless an interesting evidence of history. Since Ruzaphema is close to Dimapur, it doesn’t take long to reach the shopping destination.

    Kuki Dolong Village

    As the name suggests, the village is inhabited by the Kuki tribe, one of the oldest tribes in the Northeast. This place is located 20 km from Dimapur and falls under the Medziphema Tehsil, Dimapur District. Here, you will get a glimpse of the Kuki culture, their rich and vibrant tradition and food habits.

    Often confused to be a Naga tribe by the general world, Kukis have their own culture and tradition which makes them a distinctive tribe of their own. In the Kuki Dolong village, you will see the traditional houses of the Kukis made of bamboo. These houses have a distinctive pattern of their own, unlike traditional houses you come across in other parts of Nagaland.

    You will be amazed by the simple lifestyle of the tribe and the bond that they share with their fellow tribesmen. Make sure you buy some Kuki shawls which are known for their colour and design patterns.

    Diphupar

    If you want to get real glimpses of Nagaland in a single village, taking a trip to the Diphupar village on the outskirts of Dimapur is highly recommended. This village is about 7 km from the heart of the city and has a population of about 14000. One of the oldest village in this place it a mini Nagaland with 16 different tribes living here.

    The various tribes which reside in this village include the Angami, Lotha, Chakehsang, Sumi, Sangtam, Ao, Rengma Pouchury and Zeliang among others making it a perfect example of Naga peace and harmony. When you visit this village you will get a glimpse of the similarities and the differences among the various Naga tribes in terms of how they dress, their food habits and even their languages.

    Don’t forget to pick up on some Naga souvenirs during your visit to Diphupar. So if you can’t make a trip to different parts of Nagaland, a visit to Diphupar is a must.

    Nichuguard

    Located about 15 km from the city of Dimapur, is the village of Nichuguard. Today this place is known by the name of Chumukedima. If you want to experience the true taste of Nagaland, a trip to this place, a must for you.

    It is situated in the foothills of the Diphu-Khukhi mountain ranges and was made a Deputy Commissioner’s Headquarter in the year 1866. This place has the distinction of having the first school and hospital in Nagaland before the British administrators shifted headquarter to Kohima.

    Today you can get the glimpse of 19th century Nagaland and come across dense forests with rare plants and animal species. There is a small waterfall located in the village which serves as one of the major attractions for the tourists. This village is inhabited by the Angami and Khonoma tribes which are among the largest tribes in Nagaland.

    Seithekima Village

    Seithekima Village is located in the outskirts of Dimapur and is famous for the Triple falls. It is about an hour’s drive from the city centre and takes you through a scenic road to this place. As the name suggests the falls is a three-tier waterfall which cascades from a height of 280 ft into an inviting natural pool.

    It is a perfect destination for the trekkers and the adventure lovers who can also trek up the waterfalls during the winter months when there is relatively lesser water. The Department of Tourism, Nagaland, has developed basic amenities for the tourists increasing the appeal of this place.

    A short ride up the hill will also offer you an enjoyable ride of the Dimapur city. A resort is coming up in this place, but one of the downsides is that the approach (road) to this place is not good nevertheless makes it a perfect place for the adventure lovers.
