  • 01Digboi Oil Refinery

    Digboi Oil Refinery

    The Digboi Oil Refinery holds the prestigious title of being the first oil refinery in the country and the oldest functional refinery in the world. It was established in the 1901 and has the capacity of producing around 0.65 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum oil.

    The Digboi Oil Refinery is run by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The refinery unit also engages in distillation of wax from crude oil. The Oil Refinery is the main tourist attraction of Digboi. Tourists can see how the oil manufacturing unit was built by the British more than a hundred years ago.

    Though public are not allowed into the oil fields, special permission can be sought to visit the oil refineries. Over the years, the Digboi Oil Refinery has been improved and steps have been taken to revise the unit. The Solvent De-waxing Unit and Wax Hydro-finishing unit are two such new components of the refinery.

  • 02Margherita

    Margherita

    Margherita is a small town in Upper Assam in the Tinsukia district. Known as the Coal Queen of Assam, this sub-divisional headquarters is covered with lush green rolling tea gardens and coal mines.

    The unusual name of the town has an interesting history to it. Assam Railway and Trading Company which was responsible for bringing railways to this part of the country had employed an Italian engineer named Roberto Paganini for the job. Paganini was responsible for building the bridges that gave railway access to the coal-filled region.

    To honour this engineer, the place was named after the Italian Queen Margherita. Margherita, which is surrounded by the Patkai Ranges and the Burhi-Dehing River, has several places of interest. The Margherita Golf Course is the main tourist attraction while the several tea gardens are must-visit destinations in the town. The town is also a significant producer of plywood products.

    Ridge Point

    Ridge Point gives a breathtaking and magnificent view of the Digboi city. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Digboi, and is located close to the town. Not only does the place offer a bird’s eye view of the town, but tourists can also see the snow-capped mountains of the Eastern Himalayas.

    While on the way to Ridge Point, one can also experience the breath taking view of the town. The British presence can be felt all over and while on a trip to the view point, much of it can be felt. It is quite exciting to locate the Digboi Oil Refinery and the War Cemetery from the elevated point of the Ridge.

    During the early winter months, it is truly a treat to watch the snow-capped Himalayas from the Ridge Point. However, tourists should lookout for a clear sky and great weather to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Himalayas.

    Digboi Oil Centenary Museum

    Digboi Oil Centenary Museum situated in the oil city Digboi, is a symbol for the fact that the first traces of oil were tracked in Assam. The Digboi Oil refinery was the first oil refinery in India. The Discovery Well was the first commercially viable well in India and is located close to the museum. This significant well was founded in the year 1889.

    The inauguration of the Museum formed by the Assam Oil Corporation was done in the year 2002. The oil machinery and pumps are preserved and exhibited in the museum. The machinery from the power stations, refinery, oil fields are kept in the museum.

    The museum has a huge photo gallery which has exclusive photographs. These photos takes us on a long journey of the evolution and development of oil refinery in the history of India. It tells us the story of how Digboi made a mark on the world map. This museum is one of its kind in India.

    Knowledge about the history of the production of oil in Assam and other facts related to oil and natural gas can be obtained at the museum. It also gives information about the modern methods of oil technology. The concept of the museum was founded by the executive director of the Assam Oil Division.

  • 05War Cemetery

    War Cemetery

    The Digboi War Cemetery was built to bury the soldiers who died during the Second World War. North-eastern India under the British rule was the operational area for the Burma Campaign. Since Digboi is close to the Burmese border, a temporary Military hospital was built in the town from where bodies of the dead were sent for burial in the War Cemetery, started for the purpose.

    There are about 200 burials in the Digboi War Cemetery at present and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. At the beginning there were 70 burials, however more graves from the burial grounds of Panitola, Tinsukia, Margherita, Jorhat and Ledo were added here for better maintenance by the Army Graves Service.

    The well-maintained cemetery takes tourists back to the years of Second World War. The graves were shifted to the present location ensuing natural calamities like earthquakes, landslides owing to heavy rains etc in the 1950s. The present location was chosen such that erosion wouldn’t damage the landscape.
