Maithon Dam is 15,712 Ft long and 165 Ft high. It was primarily constructed to control flood. Situated at Maithon on Barakar River, it is 48km from Dhanbad. It spreads over 65sq km. An underground power station which was the first and foremost in entire South East Asia produces 60,000 KW of electric power. It is the biggest water reservoir of Damodar Valley Corporation. Kalyaneshwari Temple lies very close to the dam. Literally Maithon means Mother's Abode. Deer park and bird sanctuary are other tourist attractions. Visitors can enjoy fishing and boating here.
Tourists require prior permission to visit the powerhouse and guide services are also available from the office. Kumardhubi is the nearest railway station which is 5km from Maithon while Barakar is 8km. Regular bus service is available from Dhanbad, Barakar and Asansol. Private taxis are always available. Guests can relax at the rest house which is situated on an island in the lake. Tourist House and Tourist Bungalow Van Vihar are some of the halting options for the tourists. An innovative Tree Top House run by the government offers mesmerising views of the surrounding forest.
