    Adumalleshwara Temple

    Adumalleshwara Temple is one of the several attractions of Chitradurga. It is located around 5 km away from the Chitradurga Fort. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. To reach the temple, one has to either drive down or trek to the place.

    The trek route is scenic, offering amazing views of the hills. During monsoon, the whole place would be misty and beautiful. The temple premises also has a zoo that has animals like bear, crocodile, peacock, rabbit, etc.

    Chitradurga Fort

    Chitradurga Fort, or Chitaldoorg as the British called it, is one of the major attractions of Chitradurga district. The fort was built between the 17th and 18th centuries by the ruling dynasties that include the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Nayakas.

    The temple has been divided into the upper fort and the lower fort. The upper fort has 18 temples and there is one huge temple in the lower fort. The Hidimbeshwara Temple is the most interesting and the oldest among these temples.

    The fort is locally known as Kalline Kote which means the “Stone Fortress”. The other names by which the fort is called are Ukkina Kote (Steel Fort) and Yelusuttina Kote (Seven Corcles Fort).

  • 03Vani Vilas Sagar

    Vani Vilas Sagar

    Vani Vilas Sagar lake and dam are one of the recommended attractions of Chitradurga in Karnataka. The dam, also known as Mari Kanive, is the oldest dam in Karnataka. Located in Hiriyur taluk, the dam was built by the Kings of Mysore before Indian independence.

    Apart from being an architectural wonder, the dam also irrigates all the nearby places that are dry lands located in Central Karnataka. On the foothills of the dam, there is a temple dedicated to Kanive Maramma.

    The temple also has a lovely park. The best time to visit the lake and dam are from October to January. In November, Kanive Maramma annual fair is celebrated here, where devotees flock in to be a part of the festivities.

    Chandravalli

    Located in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka, Chandravalli is an archaeological site. The valley of Chandravalli is formed by the hills Chitradurga, Kirabanakallu and Cholagudda. The excavations here have found coins, earthen pots and painted bowls from various dynasties like Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and Satavahana.

    The place was named Chandanavati, which was later renamed as Chandravalli. One of the main attractions here is the Chandravalli cave temple (Ankali Matha) which is a pre-historic site. Another important place to visit here is Bhairaweshwara temple. This is a place of interest for students of history and research. It is located around 4 km away from Chitradurga.

    Jogimatti

    Jogimatti is a forested area close to Chitradurga. This is a place of scenic beauty and is known for the sighs of animals spotted here. Apart from the animals, this place is known for Himavatkedra waterfalls.

    These waterfalls that flow through the rocks have created a natural cave that consists of a shivling and the idols of Basavanna and Veerabhadra. Jogimatti Zoo is another attraction of this region. The zoo is home to some endangered species of birds like Gyps bengalensis and Pycnonotus xantholaemus.

    Hiriyur

    Hiriyur is a small town located near Chitradurga in Karnataka. Located on NH4, this place is known for the oldest dam in Karnataka. The dam Mari Kanive (Vani Vilasa Sagara) is built on the Vedavati river.

    Another attraction of Hiriyur is the Terumalleshwara Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is also known as Dakshina Kashi which means 'Kashi of the South'. With a normally dry weather, the monsoons and post-monsoon period are ideal to visit the place.

    Holalkere is located around 35 km from Chitradurga. This place was a major Jain settlement during the 10th century A.D. The place is famous for its 9 ft child God Baal Antipathy. Some other places of interest here are as follows:

    Malladihalli: Malladihalli is located around 6 km from Holalkere, towards Shimoga. The place is known for its Raghavendra Swamy Seva Ashram that comprises of an orphanage, Ayurvedic centre and also offer Yoga education.

    Ramagiri: Ramagiri is known for the Veerabhadraswamy Temple and Karisiddheshwara Mutt built on a hillock.

    Jamia Masjid

    Jamia Masjid, also known as Jama Masjid and Sultan-e-Jama Masjid, is one of the prime religious centres in Chitradurga. It is located in the Chikpet area, and was constructed by Tipu Sultan. The mosque is believed to have been built by Tipu using Indo-Saracen architecture, which also throws light on Tipu's respect for all religions.

    There are several other monuments that Tipu has built blending Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The mosque has two tall minarets. There are 13 rows inside and in each row, up to 50 people could offer prayers.

    A visit to this mosque will give you an insight into Tipu's Sultan's secular ideas and how beautifully he has maintained the features of both Indian and Arabic architectures, making the mosque a beautiful wonder.

    Halu Rameshwara Temple is located in Hosadurga taluk in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka. Situated amidst a forested area, this temple is believed to be where Lord Sriram worshipped Shiva. The well here has water that is white in colour. This well is popularly known as the wish granting well.

    Dasaratha Rameshwara Temple

    Dasaratha Rameshwara temple is located in a forest at Hosadurga taluk of Chitradurga. It is also known as Varjra. It is believed that the temple was built by King Dasaratha after he kills his son Sant Shravana, so that his deeds are neutralised.

    The shiva linga here is said to be installed by the King along with his son Rama. This temple is a very calm place, and is a great place for meditation. The other attractions near this temple are Gayatri Jalashaya, Vani Vilad Sagar dam, Rosary Church, Chitradurga fort, Ankali Mutt, etc.

    Nayakanahatti Temple

    Nayakanahatti Temple is one of the attractions in Chitradurga that you should visit. Located around 35 km from the city, this temple is dedicated to a popular sage Thipperudraswamy. This place is also said to be where the samadhi of the sage happened.

    An annual fair is organised here in the month of Phalgun. This fair and yatra that happen annually is attended by tourists from various places across the nation. Sage Thipperudraswamy was someone who worshipped Lord Shiva. Some other attractions of Chitradurga are Adumalleshwara Temple, Dasaratha Rameshwara temple and Kugo Bande.
