Baran Attractions - Tourist Places To Visit In Baran

Shergarh Fort is known for its ancient Jain and Brahmanical temples. The place is located beside the Parban river in the Atru Tehsil of Baran. Visitors can see a stone statue called Koshvardhan dating back to 790 AD in the fort.

Shahabad Fort is an ancient fort situated on the hilltop in the middle of a forest area. It was constructed in 1521 by Chauhan Vanshi Dhandhel Rajput Mukutmani Dev. It is considered as the strongest and the best fort in the entire Hadoti region. 

The fort is bounded by the valley of Kundakoh and has 18 cannons. A topkhana or artillery, a barudkhana and some temples are also located in the premises of the fort.

Brahmani Mataji Temple is located 20 km from Baran in the Sorsan Village. The temple is situated inside an ancient old fort, and the statue of the Hindu Goddess Brahmani Mata is placed in a cave under a big rock. 

There is an Akhand Jyoti in the temple which is believed to be burning since the last 400 years. A big fair is organised here every year on the occasion of Shivaratri. Animals are traded in large numbers during this festival.

Shahi Jama Masjid is located in the city of Shahabad at a distance of about of 80 km from Baran. It is a beautiful mosque that was built during the time of Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor. The shrine is adorned with beautiful towering pillars and mihrabs that attract tourists in large numbers.

Bhand Devra Temple is located on the Ramgarh Hill, 40 km away from Baran. It is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva and is popularly known as the ‘Khajuraho of Rajasthan’. Located on the banks of a pond, this shrine was built in the 10th century. 

At present, it is under the Archaeological Department for some renovation work. The temples of Kisnai and Annapurna Devi are also located on the Ramgarh Hill. These shrines are situated inside a natural cave and travellers can reach here by climbing around 750 stairs which were built by Jhala Jalim Singh.

One of the deities of the temple is worshipped with meva or dry fruits while the other is offered meat and liquor. A grand fair is organised here annually on the occasion of Kartik Purnima and devotees throng the place in large numbers to participate in the festivities.

Kapildhara is a popular picnic spot situated at a distance of about 50 km from Baran. It is an extremely beautiful place and is especially famous for the Gaumukh from which water flows continuously.

Shergarh Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Shergarh Town of the Baran District. It sprawls over an area of around 98 sq km and is home to varied species of animals. Animal lovers can spot sloth bears, tigers, leopards, wild boars, chinkaras, hyenas, sambars, chitals and endemic deer in this sanctuary.

Kakuni is located at a distance of around 85 km in the Chhipabarod Tehsil of the Baran District. The place is renowned for its temples and is situated on the banks of the Parvan river. These temples are the remains of Jain, Shiv and Vaishnava temples which date back to the 8th century. 

More than 60 per cent of the idols of the Kakuni temples are now preserved in the museums of Kota and Jhalawar. Travellers can also see the remains of the Bhimgarh Fort here which was built by King Bhim Deo.

Bilasgarh is located at a distance of about 45 km from Baran in Kishanganj. It was an important city during the reign of the Khechi kingdom, but the place was destroyed on orders of the Mughal King, Aurangzeb. He was extremely captivated by the princess of Khechi and sent his forces to fetch her. 

The Mughal army destroyed the city, and out of anguish, the princess jumped into the Bilasi river and ended her life. The spot is being called Kanyadeah after the incident.

Tapasviyo ki Bagechi is a beautiful place located in Shahabad where people go on picnics. The place presents a pretty picture with mountains in its backdrop. A Shivling and a huge idol of Nadiya are also placed here. Betel farming used to be practised in this region; remains of the same can still be found here.

Manihara Mahadev Mandir is an ancient shrine located 3 km away from Baran. The idols of the Hindu lords Mahadev and Hanuman are enshrined in this 600 year old temple. Green trees and ponds present around this beautiful temple add to its beauty. 

The Hindu festival of Shivaratri is celebrated here with great zeal and enthusiasm. The district administration has authorised the Sarvjanik Sanstha Dharmada as the temple’s caretaker.
