Zion Church

Zion Church
Zion Church is the oldest Protestant Church in India. It is located in Fort Dansborg complex at Tharagambadi. Zion Church played an integral role during the reign of Danish rule here. Interestingly, Zion Church is still a working church with daily prayers and services. It is also said to be the first Protestant Church in India.

Fort Dansborg perched on the shores of Bay of Bengal forms one of the prominent landmarks in Tharagambadi. The Danish Admiral constructed it after having an agreement with Thanjavur King. Tranquebar was a prime trading centre till it was a Danish settlement. Later, it lost its significance as the British didn't improve it. Along with the town, Fort Dansborg also lost its importance. Now it is converted into a museum exhibiting the artefacts of colonial times. It is one of the top tourist places in Tharagambadi.
New Jerusalem Church

New Jerusalem Church
New Jerusalem Church is another heritage architecture dating to the time of Danish rule. It was built by a Danish missionary in 1718. Unfortunately, some parts of the church was damaged during the Tsunami in 2004. It was renovated and is still a working church in Tharagambadi.
Danish Museum
Fort Dansborg was handed over to Tamil Nadu government after the British rule. It was later converted into a museum. The antique pieces belonging to Danish settlement, sculptures, lamps and other objects relating to the colonial era can be seen here. It is also one of the main tourist places in Tharagambadi.
Tourist Places Near Tranquebar
Masilamani Nathar is an ancient Shiva Temple built during the 14th century. It is one of the oldest monument situated at Poompuhar around 28km from Tranquebar. Some parts of this ancient temple were destroyed due to erosion and it remains as one of the heritage sites.
Tharagambadi, once a busy port town, lost its fame after the Danish rule. However, it hasn't lost its old world charm which reflects in every nook and corner of this town. It is apt for those who are looking for a quiet time!
