Guptkashi is a holy town in Uttarakhand visited by many devotees as it houses several ancient temples that are believed to be a part of the epic Mahabharata. In fact, it has derived its name from the Pandavas, who were the heroes of the epic Mahabharata.

Guptkashi has been a pilgrimage placed 47 km below the holiest shrine of Lord Shiva, the Kedarnath at the height of 1319 m above sea level. With great religious sentiments associated with this pilgrimage, two iconic temples in Guptkashi catches the attention of the devotees visiting the place - Ardhnarishwar Temple and the Vishwanath Temple - devoted to Lord Shiva.

The summer season between March to June and the months between September to November are the peak seasons to travel to Guptkashi. The summer season has a comforting and pleasant weather; whereas, during the winter season, the temperatures drop to zero degrees Celsius.

During the winter season, all the trekking and hiking routes are closed down due to heavy snowfall. The temple remains closed from the second day after Diwali and opens only in May. Also, there are delays in flights and trains due to dense fog and heavy snowfall during the winter season.

The months from June to September sees the entry of monsoons in Guptkashi. There are frequent landslides in the area, due to which the tourists avoid visiting Guptkashi during this season.

Guptkashi is easily accessible by air, train and by road from significant stations like Delhi.

By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to Guptkashi approximately 190 km away. The remaining distance needs to be covered by road either via a cab or a bus.

By Train: Rishikesh is the nearest railway station near Guptkashi approximately 168 km away. Buses and taxis are available outside the terminal to cover the remaining distance till Guptkashi.

By Road: There are several bus services and taxis available that run on NH109.

The two iconic temples dedicated to Lord Shiva - Vishwanath Temple and Ardhanareshvara Temple - are the star attractions of Guptkashi. You will be in awe at the very sight of this fabulous architecture created by stone and wood.

You can alternatively indulge in some trekking or hiking till the Kedarnath Temple and the Madhyamaheshwar Temple placed at 13 km and 25 km, respectively, from Guptkashi. To make the ride a bit more interesting, you can take a helicopter from Guptkashi to experience panoramic views of the city skyline.
