Established in 1940, Mudumalai represents one of the most prominent and aesthetically pleasing attempts at protection and conservation of the country's extensive plant and animal life.

With its scenic beauty, sightseeing spots and trekking options, Mudumalai serves as an ideal destination for family picnics, adventure trips and one day tours.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary offers sheer diversity of species viewable in the sanctuary, coupled with the different kinds of vegetation.

Tropical moist deciduous, southern tropical dry thorn and tropical dry deciduous forests are found in the sanctuary.

For bird lovers, there's the opportunity to chance your eyes upon more than two hundred species of birds that abound here.

Animal life including monitor lizards, hyenas, jackals, deer, panther and antelopes co-exist in this serene and green environment. Mudumalai is also home to a Tiger reserve that has India's highest density of tigers.

Furthermore, seven hundred Indian elephants roam the sanctuary. There are jungle safaris organized by the Forest department and these are truly worthwhile.

Moyar River

The Moyar River is a tributary of the Bhavani and originates from the town of Moyar along the Masinagudy-Ooty Road. It acts as a natural separation between the Mudumalai sanctuary and Bandipur.

A number of animals visit the river to drink water, and this serves as a good place to spot them. The Moyar River Gorge, also known as the Moyar Canyon, is 20 km in depth.

The massive gorge was dug out of the Moyar River, and the river water plunges into the Canyon from a great height giving origin to the Moyar Falls.

A whole host of picnicking spots is present along the sides of the river and tourists can be seen taking in the majestic view from here.

Mudumalai Museum

One of the places to visit in Mudumalai is the Mudumalai Museum which is located near the Elephant feeding camp. Visitors can catch a glimpse of history in the museum.

It is worth visiting the museum, to observe the former dwellers of the forest in their preserved form, and how they match up to their current counterparts.

Theppakadu Elephant Camp

The Theppakadu Elephant Camp, a tourist spot in Mudumalai, allows visitors to mingle with nature's largest land animal in a restricted environment.

Elephants are trained as well as housed here. Every day, a couple of the elephants do pooja to Lord Vinayaka inside the structure. Elephant rides are offered early in the morning and in the evening to the tourists.

During the evenings, the elephants have their routine feeding time and visitors are welcome to watch this. The Theppakadu Elephant Camp is thus, mainly used for eco tourism, patrolling, resolving man-elephant conflicts and promoting better understanding about the animal.
