A Quaint Town On The Banks Of River Beas In Himachal Pradesh

Located in this stunning state is the quintessential town of Raison. It is about 16 km from Kullu and is on the banks of Beas River. Situated at an elevation of 1433 m, Raison is popular for its camping grounds that are stretched over a vast area. Also, it is one of the top rafting destinations in the region and the rafting season is from April to the end of June.

The camping sites are maintained by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism. Also, there are a couple of tourist huts dotting the banks of River Beas. These wooden huts can be booked through the tourist office in Kullu.

Raison is surrounded by breath-taking scenic vistas of the Himalayas and gentle undulating contours of greenery. The most important thing is that it is away from the hustle and bustle of tourist trappings. In fact, the town is a reminder of the nuances that define Himachal Pradesh.

All the buses heading towards Manali through the Kullu Valley cross Raison. The Beas river traces the fringe of the town before reaching the plains of Punjab. The apple orchards are scattered around most of the hills in Raison that adds a dash of red hue to its lush green backdrop.

If a leisurely stroll around the town, fishing, trekking, an impromptu picnic, biking through the hills, kayaking and rafting in the gushing waters of the river or just laid-back holidays is what you are seeking, the valley promises all these and much more.

How To Reach Raison

By air: Kullu Airport located in Bhuntar is the nearest airport to Raison. There are direct flights plying between Delhi, Chandigarh and other places. The airport is about 25 km from Raison. Shimla airport is about 231 km and the airport at Dharamshala is 240 km from Raison.

By train: Joginder Nagar Station is the nearest place with access to the rail network. The station is about 140 km from Raison.

By road: Raison is between Kullu and Manali. All private and State Buses from Kullu to Manali will go via Raison.

Best Time To Visit Raison

Raison is exceptional all through the year and the best time depends on your travel plan. March to June is apt if you seek soothing sun and moderate weather. Summer is also the right time for outdoor activities like Trekking, River Crossing and Rafting.

If you love winter adventure then November to February is best suited to visit Raison. Also, at the end of winter in March, you can witness colourful blooms that cover the entire valley.

1. Jana Waterfalls

Nestled amidst the fruit orchards, pine trees, deodar trees and snow-capped hills is the spectacular Jana Waterfalls. The grace and grandeur of the falls cascading down through boulders and rocks is a sight to behold. A hike to the top of the hill may be strenuous, but worth the experience as you can enjoy the commanding views of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape. September to June is the best time to visit the falls.

2. International Roerich Memorial Trust

Located about 15 km from Raison on Patlikuhal-Naggar Road is the International Roerich Memorial. This captivating complex is housed in the former home of Nicholas Roerich, the Russian Painter. The lower floor of the house displays paintings by Nicholas and his son Svetoslav Roerich. The Dodge-6 convertible vehicle is also exhibited on this floor. The lower garden has a hut-studio which mainly focuses on Svyatoslav and Devika Rani, his wife who was also a popular Indian movie star.

3. Dhakpo Shedrupling Monastery

The monastery is located about 19 km from Raison in Kais village. Dalai Lama inaugurated this monastery in 2005. Nestled among the picturesque surroundings, the monastery also serves as a school to study Buddhist philosophy. Surrounded by the Himalayan peaks, the monastery is a serene place with a positive aura.
