The Peaceful Town of Rupnagar

Rupnagar located on the left bank of the Sutleg river is named after Prince Roop Sen whose father ruled over this region in the 11th century. This town is also said to house some of the remains of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Today tourists come here to take a walk back in time and see the grandeur this town once held.

Although there is not much exploring to do but tourists can head to the museum here where the remains of its past glory are preserved. Then again there are a few places to visit in Rupnagar that will certainly refresh and rejuvenate tourists both physically and spiritually. Anandpur Sahib
One of the places to visit in Rupnagar is the Anandpur Sahib, located in the lower part of the Himalayan Range in this town. Built by the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur; it is a major pilgrimage site for the Sikhs. It is believed that the Guru stayed here and later built this gurudwara for people to come and pray. Devotees come here in large numbers to pray and also pay their respects to the guru.

Virasat-e-Khalsa
A tourist place in Rupnagar is the Virasat-e-Khalsa, earlier known as Khalsa Heritage Memorial Complex. This complex consists of a museum, auditorium, library and a photo gallery. Tourists visiting this place will be amazed by its grand architecture, which is a mix of modern as well as Rajput design. You can tour this complex and learn more about the growth of Sikhism in India and about all the guru's who helped in its growth. The library is laden with books on religion and spiritualism. The auditorium here is used to stage cultural events and also show documentaries based on Sikhism. It is a perfect place to increase your knowledge about the religion and also to marvel at this grand structure.

Bhakra Nangal Dam
Another place to visit in Rupnagar is the Bhakra Nangal Dam built on the Sutlej river. It is the second largest dam in India and provides hydroelectricity not only in Rupnagar but also the neighbouring states. The dam has a man made reservoir called Gobind Sagar, which is a perfect place for tourists to hang out. The picturesque view from here is absolutely enthralling. You can head here with your family for a picnic as well.

How to Reach Rupnagar

By Air: The nearest airport to Rupnagar is in Amritsar around 200 km. It is well-connected to all the major cities in the country.

By Train: A number of trains connect Rupnagar Railway Station to cities in Punjab and other Indian states. It is directly connected to New Delhi and Himachal Pradesh by Janshatabdi and Himachal Express, respectively.

By Road: Buses, public and private, are the best mode of transportation to travel to Rupnagar from nearby cities. Tourists can also choose to travel to the city by taxi or cab.
