The city of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh has references dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. The ancient city has been an archaeologist's dream with the many excavations done in the region pointing to ancient remains, such as the artefacts attributed to the city of Hastinpur that was the capital of the Pandavas in the book of Mahabharata. It has also earned its name among the Buddhist centres in India with the existing relics from the Mauryan Empire.
