Travel to the Coal Capital of India, Dhanbad

The city of Dhanbad in Jharkhand is famous for its coal mines and is better referred to as the 'Coal Capital of India'. It has some of the richest coal fields and is known to distribute coal all throughout the country. Not a regular travel destination for tourists, Dhanbad has its own set of attractions, which are only known to those who venture here.

Being the coal mining region, tourists usually overlook this city as they believe it to be completely industrial. But there are places of interest here that would surprise the visitors. Here is a some interesting attractions that travellers can enjoy visiting on a trip to Dhanbad.

Dhanbad Coal Mines

Dhanbad Coal Mines

Among the places to visit in Dhanbad are its coal fields. The occupation of most of the people living here is working in these mines. It has nearly 112 coal mines, and this has made it the busiest commercial centre in India. Tourists coming here can take a tour of the coal mines and see how they are cut from the rocks. Do be careful when you go here as chances are high that you may get your clothes covered in coal dust.

Maithon Dam

Maithon Dam

A tourist place in Dhanbad is the Maithon Dam, situated on the Barakar River. It boasts of an underground power station which was the first to be ever built in South East Asia. It is the biggest water reservoir in the region. Tourists coming here need to take prior permission to explore the power station. There is also a wildlife sanctuary nearby where you can head to and see deers and many birds.

Panchet Dam

Panchet Dam

Another place to visit in Dhanbad is the Panchet Dam, a hydal power station that provides electricity to the district. It is located close to Maithon Dam and is a fishing region. Tourists coming here can enjoy the scenic view of the place and also go fishing in these waters. The regular catches here include catla, rohu and mrigal.

Shakti Mandir

Shakti Mandir

Another tourist place in Dhanbad is the Shakti Mandir dedicated to Goddess Durga. Devotees come here from far and wide to seek the blessings of the goddess, and also to see the 'Akhand Jyoti' or the eternal flame that is said to have been brought here from Vaishno Devi. Tourists coming to this temple are left amazed by its magnificent architecture, and also by the chantings of hymns and prayers that resound all around the temple. It is a perfect place to meditate and connect with your spiritual self.

Birsa Munda Park

An attraction in Dhanbad is the Birsa Munda Park, which boasts of many entertaining attractions that can be enjoyed by people of all age groups. It has many rides and activities to keep the children busy and also there are walkways and parks where the elderly can rest. It is a perfect place to head to with your family for a day of fun.

Topchanchi Lake

Topchanchi Lake

Another place to visit in Dhanbad is the Topchanchi Lake, a man-made water-body situated amidst forests and hills. The lake previously served as a reservoir that supplied water to the nearby districts. Today, it is a recreational spot you can head to with your family for a picnic and enjoy taking a dip in the cool waters of this lake.

How to Reach Dhanbad

By Air: Dhanbad is 175 km from Birsa Munda Airport Ranchi. It is well-connected with all the major cities in the country.

By Train: Dhanbad is well-connected by railways to major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and many more. Almost all the states of India are connected through rail routes.

By Road: NH-2 and NH-32 run across Dhanbad. These two major highways connect the mining capital with various places. NH-2 being a part of Golden Quadrilateral connects Dhanbad to Delhi. NH-32 connects to Bokaro and Jamshedpur. State and private buses help in inter-city travelling.
