Devikulam is a beautiful hill station with picturesque landscapes, located in God's Own Country, Kerala. Some of the scenic attractions at Devikulam are its gurgling waterfalls cutting across the sharp sides of rocks and hillocks covered with a lush carpet of velvety meadows.

Devikulam is about 7 km from Munnar in the Idukki district and nature lovers come here to admire and study divergent flora and fauna. It is a trekker's delight and an excursion through the plantations and red gum trees would truly vouch for an enchanting experience. Here is a guide to this beautiful hill town.

Mattupetty Lake

Mattupetty Lake is a tranquil attraction in Devikulam located in the Idukki Hills. It is cradled by the undulating plantation hills of Munnar. Densely forested mountain terrains and uniformed plantations form a postcard view, rejuvenating both the body and the mind of travellers. Mattupetty dam, built in 1940, provides for a perfect picnic spot.

It is best known for the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project, and over 100 varieties of cows are reared here. Mountain terrains and spice gardens forms the background for this picturesque lake. One can boat around this lake to further explore it. Speed, motor and pedal boating are available for a traveller to hire. The hills reverberate with sounds of various twittering birds, making bird-watching another prime attraction of this spot.

Sita Devi Lake

Sita Devi Lake, popularly known as the Devikulam Lake, attracts picnickers not only because it is a scenic spot but also because the waters here are enriched with minerals that have curative properties. The lake also has a thermal water spring as one of its attractions. Nature here has wonderfully manifested itself into so many forms that one is truly mesmerised.

Another factor adding to the sacredness and purity of this lake is the legend that claims that Goddess Sita has herself bathed here. With the shade of tall trees, lush green lawns, cool and crystal clear waters gushing through the rocks and chirping of birds, Sita Devi Lake would serve as a perfect getaway destination.

Tea and Spice Plantations

Another major attraction in Devikulam is the tea and spice plantations. These plantations are bursting with a varied mix of flora and fauna. The even acres of tea and spice plantations are adorned with numerous other exotic varieties of trees. You can enjoy the scents of spice plantations and lose yourself on the velvety bends of the tea plantations.

The red and blue gum trees and exotic flora adorn these rolling hills. It is truly an enriching experience to visit the sprawling tea and spice plantations. Rows and rows of neatly trimmed tea shrubs, pepper, clove and cardamom fill their irresistible essence in the air.

Thoovanam Falls

Thoovanam Falls, situated in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, is a must visit place in Devikulam. The waterfall is gorgeous with its mighty silvery cascades, and serves as an ideal destination for travellers and photographers alike. This stunning waterfall is a perfect spot for any nature lover. It is formed by the river Pambar that flows eastward through the sanctuary.

Trekkers are sure to find the untouched, virginal beauty of this forest impressive. Wild animals and sporadic flora is a feast for the eyes. Thoovanam Falls is open around the year and attracts a great number of tourists and picnickers. A trekking trail also exists from Karimutti Forest Station to Thoovanam waterfalls.

Pallivasal Falls

Pallivasal Falls is a small yet popular waterfall in Devikulam, and is located in proximity to the Sita Devi Lake. The waterfall offers an excellent spot for picnicking and sightseeing for those who want a day away from the buzzing madness of cities. Travellers can spend their time in tranquillity and peace to revamp their bodies and unwind their minds. Nature has manifested its beauty in this spectacular waterfall. Travellers can club together their visits to the Sita Devi Lake and Pallivasal Falls.

How to Reach Devikulam

By Air: Kochi International Airport, which is around 111 km from the Devikulam town, is the nearest airport. Kochi Airport is well connected to other Indian cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi.

By Train: Devikulam is not directly connected by rail, but travellers can take trains to the nearest railway stations. Kochi (150 km) and Kottayam (136 km) are the nearest cities connected by trains.

By Road: Devikulam is easily accessible by road from both Kochi and Kottayam and the road trip is a pleasing experience to nature lovers. Road options include both State Transport Buses and private buses. The route to Devikulam is full of breathtaking sceneries and steep slopes. Tickets are cheap; buses can be crowded though.
