The Rice Bowl of Mizoram, Champhai

The small village of Champhai overlooks the majestic Myanmar hills and is one of the most picturesque places any traveller can be to. Regarded as the 'Rice Bowl of Mizoram', this village is laden with beauty, culture and traditions. The locals and tribals live together and help in the manufacturing of wine here.

A trip here is surely not to be missed as the people are very friendly and are always ready to show travellers around. There are a few places to visit in Champhai, but what is really amazing is the many fairy tale stories that you get to hear from the locals here. It is as if each family has his own story to say. Hnahlan

One of the places to visit in Champhai is the small village of Hnahlan that was ruled by the Sailo tribes till 1954. The village is very famous for its wine production. Nearly everybody who lives in this town is part to the winery. Tourists coming here can explore the vineyards and also see the process involved in making wine. You can also purchase a bottle of wine from here and carry it back home or simply enjoy the beautiful view of the region sipping on it.

Mizo Hlakungpui Mual

A major tourist place in Champhai is the Mizo Hlakungpui Mual, which is also known as the Mizo Poet's Square. It is a monument built to honour the many poets of Mizoram. It was built at first to honour two great poets of this state, Patea and Damhuahva, but later was decided that each and every poet would have his own tomb here. Tourists coming here can see the tombs of the best poets that lived here. It also has a small park which you can visit for recreational purposes.

Thasiama Seno Neihna

Another place to visit in Champhai is the Thasiama Seno Neihna, which is a beautiful plateau on a rugged hill. There are a few legends that revolve around this place, and it is visited often by the locals. One of the belief says that a fairy once blessed a cow of a farmer here and thereafter the farmers life changed. Even till date farmers get their livestock here and seek the fairy's blessings. Tourists coming here have to climb a series of steep stairs to reach the place. The view from here is absolutely breathtaking.

How to Reach Champhai

By Air: The nearest airport to Champhai is in Aizawl located approximately 192 km away. The Lengpui Airport has daily flights to Guwahati, Kolkata, Agartala and Imphal.

By Train: Mizoram doesn't have a railway station and thus the nearest railhead to Champhai is Silchar in Assam, located about 352 km away. The Silchar railway station is a small one and has a narrow gauge line to Lumding, which then connects to Guwahati.

By Road: NH-54 connects Champhai to other parts of the state. Since Champhai is a bustling trading town of Mizoram, road connectivity is good. Tourists can easily find regular buses and other small vehicles plying on this route.
