Ahmednagar is a city that comes under the state of Maharashtra and Lies on the west bank of the river Sina. Ahmednagar has a track record of more than a half a millennium worth of history, starting right back in the 1490s. Ahmednagar was established as a town back in 1494 by the Ahmed Nizam Shah. The district hence derives its name from its founder. The region's history goes right back to the time when Ahmed Nizam Shah founded the district under the Nizami Shahi dynasty right before it was taken over by the great Mughal ruler, Shah Jahan, around 150 years later in 1636. Ahmednagar Fort
The Ahmednagar Fort is a major attraction in Ahmednagar. The founder of the city of Ahmednagar, Ahmed Nizam Shah, built the Ahmednagar Fort sometime during the 15th and 16th Century. The fort has tall walls, 18 mt high which are supported by 22 bastions. It has 24 citadels, 30 metres wide.
It served as a prison to accommodate captured enemy soldiers. It was also used to imprison several leaders of the Indian National Congress during the Quit India Movement. The famous book of author Jawaharlal Nehru, The Discovery of India, was written here. It is presently under the maintenance of the Military Command of India.

Salabat Khan's Tomb
The Salabat Khan's Tomb is a much sought after destination in Ahmednagar. Located at an altitude of 900 mt above sea level on the top of a hill named Shah Dongar, the Tomb of Salabat Khan is popularly known as Chand Bibi's Mahal.
Salabat Khan had built the monument for his own self. He served as a minister under the fourth Nizam Shah from 1565 to 1579. The tomb gives a significant and historical insight into the death of Murtaza at the hands of the great Chenghiz Khan. It is surrounded by a three storeyed verandah. The tomb itself in constructed in an octagonal shape. It houses the remains of Salabat Khan, his two wives and sons.

Tank Museum
The Tank Museum goes by the full name Cavalry Tank Museum and is located in the vicinity of the Armoured Corps Centre and School in the city of Ahmednagar. It was inaugurated by the late Gen BC Joshi, Former Army Chief and a tank-man in 1994. This museum is the first of its kind in Asia.
The Tank Museum is home to an enormous collection of tanks used by various rulers over the ages. The Mark-I fitted with a tractor engine is from the World War I period and is a major attraction here. The amphibious tanks deployed for the Normandy Landings during World War II is yet another prime attraction here.The museum is a testimony to the evolution of the tanks over the years. It houses armoured cars and light tanks - close to about 40 of them from different nationalities like Pakistan, Germany and Japan.

How to Reach Ahmednagar
By Air: The Pune Lohegaon Airport is the nearest domestic airport to Ahmednagar, at a distance of about 113 km. It is well connected with all the major cities of the country.
By Rail: Ahmednagar is well connected by rail to all the major towns and cities within and outside Maharashtra.
By Road: There are various state transport and private tour buses available from most of the cities within the state of Maharashtra till Ahmednagar. If you plan to drive down to Ahmednagar from Mumbai, the distance is around 258 km and takes approximately four hours of travel.
