Kolanupaka Temple

Also known as Kulpakji, Kolanupaka Temple is one of the oldest-known Jain temples in South India and is one of the most frequented sites in Nalgonda. On an average, it is visited by more than ten thousand devotees and local tourists every year. As per records, it is believed to have been in existence for the last 200 years and hence, it is also a site of historical significance.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankar of Jainism; however, you can also find the idols of Lord Neminatha and Lord Mahavira within the compound of the temple. Therefore, it is considered a prominent pilgrimage centre amongst Jain followers.

Built out of red sandstone and white marble, the temple is also a fine work of architecture. However, it has gone through several renovations over a period of time. If you are history buff, you should not miss out on this ancient wonder.

Bhongir Fort

A 10th-century fort built atop a monolithic rock at an elevation of about 500 feet, Bhongir Fort is one of the invaluable splendours of Nalgonda and hence, it must be visited by every tourist and traveller, especially a history lover and architecture enthusiast. The fort is believed to have been constructed during the reign of the Chalukyas; however, later on, it was under the rule of several other dynasties, which include Kakatiyas and Bahamani Sultans.

Today, it has become a famous weekend destination amongst locals who come here every Sunday to savour the panoramic beauty of the Nalgonda from the top of the fort. You can also visit the small Hanuman temple, which is located at the base of the hill. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is one of the largest dams in South India and was constructed in between 1955 and 1967. It is also one of the earliest hydroelectric projects in India and is built over Krishna river. Today, the major attraction of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is its huge reservoir, which is the second largest dam reservoir in India.

It is one of the few religious sites in the district which are frequented by everyone irrespective of their religions.

Devarakonda Fort

Another magnificent fort within the boundaries of Nalgonda, Devarakonda Fort is said to have been built in between the 13th century and the 14th century by Padmanayaka rulers. However, the exact history of the fort is still unknown. As of now, the fort is in a dilapidated condition and is only visited by a few history lovers and local tourists. You must catch a glimpse of this ancient beauty if you are looking forward to learning in detail about the past of Nalgonda.
