The old Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, features amongst the most famous temples in Uttarkashi. The Shivling or the statue of Lord Shiva is 90 cm in circumference and 60 cm in height. This temple, placed on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, is famous for its splendour and magnificence.

Set in the cultural capital of North India, the temple comes with stunning views of the river nestled amidst mountains. The outer chamber of the temple features statues of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati. It is also named the Golden Temple due to its three domes designed in pure gold. In the entrance of the temple there is a metal trident that features inscriptions of the Naga dynasty that is 26 feet high.

Sage Parshuram built this temple and Maharani Khaneti, wife of Sudarshan Shah, later renovated it in 1857. Images of Sakshi Gopal and the sage Markandeya meditating, created in the ancient era, are present. There were significant Indo-Tibetan cultural exchanges that occurred in that period, proof of which are the Tibetan inscriptions in the temple.

The temple is designed in a typical ancient-Indian architecture and has inspired many Indian temples in many parts of India. There are three main sections in the temple - a pinnacle of Lord Kashi Vishwanath, the gold dome and the flag or trident on the golden peak.

Numerous shrines dedicated to other gods and goddess are present in the temple complex. Every shrine has a statue of different lords including Vishnu, Sanishwara, Virupaksh Gauri, Avimukteshwara, Virupaksha, Vinayaka, Dhandapani, etc. A silver altar holds the Shivaling placed inside the sanctum sanctorum.

By Air: Jolly Grant Airport located in Dehradun is at a distance of about 180 km from Uttarkashi. From the airport, either hire a cab or board the state transport-run buses to reach Uttarkashi.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is at Dehradun, located at a distance of 144 km. The Dehradun railway station is well connected to major cities and towns like Delhi, Haridwar etc.
