As it has been ruled by several dynasties in the past, including the Pandyas, the Pallavas and the Vijayanagara Empire, it makes for a perfect stoppage to learn about the Medieval Period of India. Over a period of Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple has become a synonym to the town. Therefore, it would be absolutely right to say that your trip to Namakkal is incomplete if you forget to visit Anjaneyar Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and houses one of his tallest statues in the country.

The major festival celebrated here include the 15-day Panguni Uthiram Festival. Even though the history of the temple is still unknown, it is said to be established before the Common Era. However, no strong evidence to prove its actual age has still been found.

No history buff can afford to miss visiting the majestic Namakkal Fort. Located atop a small hillock, which is believed to be brought by Lord Hanuman, this ancient marvel was built in the 17th century during the reign of the Madurai Nayakas. However, it was ruled by several rulers in the subsequent years, including Hyder Ali.

You need to trek up the hillock to reach the top of the fort. If you would love to capture the panoramic beauty of Namakkal, then there cannot be a better place than this fort. Today, it is under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Dedicated to Lord Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple is one of the most visited and significant religious sites in the town. As per historical records, the temple was built in the 8th century by the Pandya kings.

However, as per locals, the temple was established thousands of years ago when a Saligrama grew up into a large mountain after it was placed here by Goddess Lakshmi. Since then, the temple is believed to be the abode of Lord Vishnu.

Today, it is also known for its beautiful rock-cut architecture. From beautiful pillared halls to commendable carving over walls, each and every corner contributes to the great structure of the temple. Every year, it is visited by tourists as well as Hindu devotees in thousands, especially during the 15-day Panguni Uthiram Festival.
