Alandi - A Spiritual Connection Like Never Before

The small and silent town of Alandi is far from the rush of Pune in spite of being in close proximity to it. Known for its spiritual significance, Alandi is flocked by thousands of devotees round the year who arrive to seek inner peace and express their devotion to Saint Dnyaneshwar.

Alandi is also known as Devachi Alandi, which translates to god's place. The beautiful temples built in the 13th century stand to this date attesting the marvellous architectural design and the deep religious values of the locals. The place is associated with Saint Dnyaneshwar who was a famous poet of the 13th century and is known for the translation of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita in Marathi.

The entire place is clean and unpolluted. Travelling to Alandi works great for spiritual rejuvenation and relaxing the mind. Alandi is primarily a rural place and farming communities flourish there. A visit to Alandi gives a magnificent insight of the rural culture, cultivation methods and cultural ethos of the people.

Indrayani river follows through the town and the waters are sacred for the locals as well as people visiting there. The samadhi of Saint Dnyaneshwar is built near the banks of the river.

Every year during the Hindu month of Kartik, devotees from all over Maharashtra assemble in Alandi to commence a spiritual journey to the Sant Dnyaneshwar's Temple. The walk is covered by people of all ages in colourful and vibrant clothes carrying well-decorated paraphernalia of their saint.

The temple houses Lord Shiva's Jyotirlinga and is dedicated to Lord Chaangdev Maharaj. The temple is located near Alandi at the confluence of Tapi and Purna rivers. The place is archaeologically preserved and managed by the government.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Ram and is known for its vibrant and majestic Ram Navami day celebrations. The temple is located on the outskirts of Alandi near the banks of Indrayani river.

Muktabai Temple

The temple is located at Muktai Nagar. Muktabai was the youngest sister of Saint Dnyaneshwar. Legend says that she was the incarnation of Shakti. She held a dignified honour during the 12th century and is believed to be the guru of Yogi Changdev Maharaj.

There are two temples located nearby which are dedicated to her. The temple premises are always flocked by devotees. The serene atmosphere prevailing amongst the greenery of the nearby garden of the temple is a worth visit.

The temple premise was constructed during the 16th century and is the place where Saint Dnyaneshwar attained Samadhi in front of Lord Panduranga. The very ambience of the temple interiors is rejuvenating.

Kirtans and holy prayers are chanted the entire day is harmony by the devotees to express dedication. The temple is also located at the banks of the Indrayani river and beautiful ghats are built around the temple premise, which is a perfect place to spend the evenings.

The memorial of Shivaji's son, Sambhaji who became the second ruler of the mighty Maratha Empire is located at just 6 km distance from Alandi. The historical memorial attests the honour and glory of the Maratha rulers.

Alandi can be best visited during the Kartik month (mid October to mid November) as the famous festival of Kartika Vadya Ekadashi is held during this time which gives visitors a chance to have a deep look into the vibrant culture of the place. The winter months are also cool and pleasant to visit.
