Charcoal has been since time immemorial used for a range of purposes both domestic as well as industrial. Charcoal drawings of Cro Magnon found in the caves suggests that it was the first synthetic material produced by man. Traditionally it has been used by the blacksmith's in their forge. It is usually produced by slow pyrolysis, the heating of wood or other substances in the absence of oxygen. This video shows charcoal traditional making furnaces in Haryana state, India.
