The great Indian camel band- Rajasthan
Rajasthan without its camels, those loyal, dependable, hardy animals, is unimaginable. Every year, in the month of January, a grand festival is organized to venerate the ship of the desert, the Rajasthanis best friend in the desert. The festival, known as the Camel Festival of Bikaner, has a variety of spectacles and competitions, guaranteed to thrill the onlooker.
The clip shows the camel procession at the beginning of the festival. The beautifully decorated camels march to the tune of the band atop them against the backdrop of the Junagarh Fort.
The Jaisalmer Rissala was originally the army of the Jaisalmer Kingdom. After independence it was inducted into the Indian army as the Jaisalmer Riassala regiment. Its camel borne band was the only one of its kind in India. About two decades ago the regiment was disbanded and became part of the Border Security Force patrolling the desert borders of Rajasthan. The camel band even now takes part in the Republic Day Parade at Delhi every year and is a novelty for tourists.
