An ancient city in the state of Bihar, India, Vaishali hold a significant position when it comes to the rich cultural heritage of the country. It is the birth place of Mahavira, the founder of Jainism. Gautama Buddha, the spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism preached his last sermon here before his death in ca 483 BCE.

Vaishali was the capital of the vibrant republican Licchavi, the most famous tribe amongst the ruling confederate clans of the Vajji mahajanapada of ancient India. Named after King Vishal of the Mahabharata age, Vaishali houses a large number of temple complexes. The place is significant also for the relic stupa of Buddha, which was erected to commemorate the spiritual teacher.

Located close to this relic stupa is the Abhishek Pushkarini, a coronation tank. The sacred waters of the tank anointed the elected representatives of Vaishali.
