Tulja Bhawani Mandir, Tuljapur

4

The Tulja Bhawani Mandir is situated in the small village of Tuljapur and is credited to be one of the 51 Shakti Pithas in India. The temple was built during the 12th century, and provides a window into the architectural style of that era.

The mandir is dedicated to Goddess Tulja Bhawani – an avatar of Goddess Devi. The idol of the goddess is carved out of granite and is more than a metre tall. It has eight arms with varied weapons in each one of them allegedly used to kill the demon Mahishasura.

The head of the demon can be seen in one of her hands. It is believed that Goddess Tulja Bhawani took birth with the sole purpose of destroying this demon. The site of Tuljapur has turned into a major pilgrim centre solely due to the presence of this temple here. Worshippers and devotees can be seen visiting this place of worship by hordes at all times during the year.
