  • 01Tulja Bhawani Mandir

    The Tulja Bhawani Mandir is situated in the small village of Tuljapur and is credited to be one of the 51 Shakti Pithas in India. The temple was built during the 12th century, and provides a window into the architectural style of that era.

    The mandir is dedicated to Goddess Tulja Bhawani – an avatar of Goddess Devi. The idol of the goddess is carved out of granite and is more than a metre tall. It has eight arms with varied weapons in each one of them allegedly used to kill the demon Mahishasura.

    The head of the demon can be seen in one of her hands. It is believed that Goddess Tulja Bhawani took birth with the sole purpose of destroying this demon. The site of Tuljapur has turned into a major pilgrim centre solely due to the presence of this temple here. Worshippers and devotees can be seen visiting this place of worship by hordes at all times during the year.

    Ghat Shila Temple

    The Ghat Shila Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. An ancient rock temple located in the city of Tuljapur, this Temple has an interesting mythological adage behind it.

    It is believed that Lord Rama passed through these rocks (Shila) along with his brother Lakshman, in the mountains (Ghats) to search for Goddess Sita – his wife. It is believed that he was directed by Goddess Tulja Bhawani towards Lanka, the place where Sita was abducted to.

    This is how the temple came to get the name of Ghat Shila Mandir. This temple regularly sees worshippers thronging the vicinity to offer their prayers and seek blessings from Lord Rama. The pilgrims love the natural and placid setting this place of worship is set in.

    Vishnu Tirth

    The Vishnu Tirth is located to the northeast of the Tulja Bhawani Temple and has three entrances. It is similar to the Kallola Tirth Tank and is believed to be the site where the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati come together. It is connected to the main Mandir via stone steps. It is a popular spot amongst devotees who come here to take a holy bath to cleanse their sins.

    Kallola Tirth Tank

    Kallola Water Tank is a huge water tank situated in the first stage of the Tuljapur Temple – at the Prakara Temple. The tank is close to 40 ft by 20 ft in dimension, circumvented by a wall on all sides. Legend has it that the sacred water of the three holy rivers of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati merge together in this tank, post an invite from Lord Brahma.

    When the water merges, it makes a deep resonating noise called the Kolahal due to which the tank came to be called as Kallola Tirth Tank. It is believed that one visit to this holy place washes off all your sins – a reason why one will find plenty of devotees taking a dip in the holy tirth of the place.

    Papanashi Tirth

    The Papanashi Tirth is one of the most noteworthy water tanks in Tuljapur. Papanashi literally translates to ‘water destroying sins’ and the place is credited with helping devotees wash off their sins. This tirth tank is situated outside the Tulja Bhawani Temple, about 500 m away near the circuit house.

    This tank goes back to several centuries and is covered in stone. Numerous people take a dip in this water daily, to purge themselves of their sins.

    Sant Garibnath Mutt

    The Sant Garibnath Mutt is also known as the Dashavatar Mutt, and is close to the main temple of Tulja Bhawani. The Mutt was built several centuries ago by Sant Garibnath who was an ardent worshipper of Lord Vishnu. It is an attractive spot decorated with images depicting Lord Vishnu in his ten incarnations. Currently, the Mutt offers yoga and meditation classes for its visitors. The Mutt is open to its devotees at all times during the day.

    Dhakte

    Dhakte Tuljapur is located on the outskirts of the Tulja Bhawani Temple and is considered to be a younger Tuljapur Temple by itself – hence the name Dhakte Tuljapur, where Dhakte means ‘Young’ in Marathi.

    The small idol found here was discovered by a Muslim. Pilgrims consider it essential to pay a visit to this small temple prior to visiting the main Tulja Bhawani Temple. The temple is located at a distance of 2 km from the main temple.

    Chintamani is located just outside the Tuljapur Bhawani Temple. It is dedicated to Goddess Chintamani who is believed to help her devotees take apt decisions at the right time. The structure of the Temple is in the form of a round stone and houses a grand palanquin abundant with beautiful hand painted imagery, used for processions every Tuesday, Friday, Sunday and on full moon days.

    A huge rush of worshippers and followers are seen thronging the gates on these auspicious days. In the nearby area, one can see various other small shrines dedicated to Gods like Khandoba, Matangi, Yamai Devi and Narsimha.
