India and Tourism

India has been traveller's favourite since ages as it is a nation that has everything that a traveller looks for. From the world famous Taj Mahal and the sensual sculptures of Khajuraho to the charming Mysore Palace and the Goa Carnival, India has it all. With more and more foreign tourists flocking in to the country, the tourism industry of India has become strong enough to attract international travellers as well as the Indian lot. On a broader classification, the tourism of India can be divided into several sectors. Lets have a closer look on these.

Adventure Tourism

India has immense potential for adventure as there are many destinations in the country that are popular around the globe for adventurous activities. Paragliding in Mussoorie, Parasailing in Naukuchiatal, Mountaineering in Manali, mountain biking in Leh, trekking in Munnar, white-water rafting in Rishikesh and angling in Coorg are a few activities that tourists look out for.

Wildlife Tourism

Rich with thick forests and preserved woodlands, India has a number of wildlife sanctuaries and reserves protecting the wild and giving them a proper breeding ground. Tourists can visit these places to take a safari through the jungles and watch the animals. A few sanctuaries like the Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary allows you to take a drive through the jungle during day time, but under the strict guidelines of the Forest Department. Some of the other famous wildlife reserves include the Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, Gir National Park in Gujarat, Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan and the National Parks in Assam.

Pilgrimage Tourism

India has a diverse culture with people belonging to different religions, caste and creed. The tourism department of the country gains a considerable share of its revenue from the pilgrimage centres spread across the states in India. The temples, churches, Buddhist sites and other centres are known for their mythological relevance and their architecture among the other aspects. A few of the popular pilgrimage sites in India include the Ghats in Varanasi, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, the ashrams in Rishikesh, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Krishna temples at Mathura and the monasteries in Sikkim.

Eco Tourism

India is a hub of some of the best eco-tourist destinations in the world. Due to its topography, India is rich with flora and fauna and thus has a huge list of eco-tourist destinations with lush greenery and a wide variety of birds and animals that attract tourists from around the globe. You are sure to hit an eco-tourist spot near to any tourist spot in the country. Some of the places known for eco tourism in India are Rishikesh, Kerala and Pondicherry among the rest.

Cultural Tourism

India being a culturally diverse nation, there is ample opportunity for cultural tourism too. Filled with communities that follow different religions, beliefs and rituals, the land is a perfect blend of cultural activities, festivals, traditional art forms and mouthwatering cuisine. Some of the cultural aspects of India that has claimed attention among the global tourists are the Goa Carnival, the Diwali and Holi celebrations, the dance forms of Kathak, Kuchipudi and Kathakali among the rest.

Medical Tourism

Medical tourism in India has flourished in the past few decades due to two major reasons. The cost of the treatments done in Indian hospitals are the lowest in Asia when compared to other countries like Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. People around the globe fly to India to get major surgeries and treatments done here as the infrastructure and amenities of Indian hospitals are at par with those of the US and the UK.
