Kozhikode (Calicut) city in Kozhikode district has a number of attractions. The city which has witnessed many historical events, is also a place that invites travellers to know more about it.

There are many tourist spots in Kozhikode: beaches, temples, mosques, historical monuments etc. From ages Calicut has been an important place in Malabar region.

A centre for trade and commerce in olden days, this place witnessed the landing of Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama. This event marked the first international sea route from Europe to India.

Today, Kozhikode is the second largest city in Kerala. Tourists will not only be happy with the amazing destinations but also the cuisine. Kozhikode with an influence of number of traditions and cultures, it offers a varieties of sea food and the famous Malabar Biriyani.

Kappad beach ( Kappakadavu) is a beach where Vasco Da Gama landed in India on 1498. This rock studded beach is a popular one located near to Kozhikode city.
Vasco Da Gama's voyage to this beautiful place in Kerala marked the sea route from Europe to India. Zamorins (Samoothiris), the rulers of Malabar at that time welcomed Vasco Da Gama and there is also a stone inscription which marks the landing of the Portuguese explorer.
This famous beach is a must visit tourist spot in Kozhikode (Calicut).

MANANCHIRA

MANANCHIRA

Mananchira was a pond built by the Zamorin Mana Vikrama in 14th century. This lake is located at the centre of Kozhikode city and it was used as a bathing pool by Zamorins. In 19th century, Calicut's municipal council prohibited the domestic use and made it a drinking water source for the city. This pond is also a major tourist attraction in Kozhikode.

MANANCHIRA SQUARE

Mananchira square is a park around the lake and it is named after the Mananchira lake. Earlier named as Mananchira Maidanam ( playground), this park was famous for football tournaments. Now Mananchira Square is used for conducting cultural programmes.

TALI SIVA TEMPLE

TALI SIVA TEMPLE

Tali Siva temple is one of the ancient temples in Kozhikode (Calicut). Even to this day, it's an important spiritual and cultural centre in Kozhikode. This shiva temple has unique architecture and the gigantic walls look like an elephant's belly (anna palla). The temple conducts many cultural events annually.

THUSHARAGIRI FALLS

THUSHARAGIRI FALLS

Thusharagiri is a famous water fall which forms from the two streams flowing from the Western Ghats. This water fall looks like a snow spray, hence the name 'Thusharagiri' meaning the snow-capped mountain. Around 52 km from Kozhikode, this tourist spot is known for trekking and rock climbing.

Kozhikode Beach is a famous beach in the city. This well maintained beach is a favourite among locals and tourists. Though it is developed, the beach is not a crowded one. Calicut beach is also a place which has witnessed for many historical events. Visiting this beautiful beach can be a pleasant experience and one can also go to the Lighthouse, Lion club's Children park near the beach.

Mishkal Mosque built in the medieval period is an important cultural and historical monument in Kerala. This is one of the oldest mosques in Malabar and is named after Nakhooda Mishkal, who built it in 14th century. Known for its ancient architecture, this mosque is a popular tourist destination.

Sarovaram is an eco-friendly park located near Kozhikode. This park is developed to promote eco-tourism and it consists of mangrove trees and wetlands. There are many development projects going on this park, however it is open to public.

LOKANARKAVU TEMPLE

Lokanarkavu temple in Vadakara is 50 km from Kozhikode. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and has historical importance. Pooram festival is celebrated in a grand way and many devotees visit this temple often.

Sand Banks is situated in Vadakara, this beach is very beautiful and known for the view of sunset. Sand banks is a famous beach which attracts many tourists. Vadakara is also the birth place of the great martial hero of Kerala, Thacholi Othenan. There is also a temple dedicated to the martial hero near the beach.
