Any tourist travelling to Kerala would have heard of Kovalam, one of the top travel destinations of Kerala. With its glistening beaches and palaces that attract the eyes of a traveller, Kovalam has lots in store for the wanderer in you.

Hawah Beach

Hawah Beach, located around 2 km from the city, is one of the popular tourist attractions in Kovalam. The beach is not so crowded, giving the tourists an experience close to nature.

The Hawah Beach also has the Hawah Beach Resort where you can go for a rejuvenating body massage while you enjoy listening to the serene waves of the beach. Nights at the Hawah beach is even more attractive which tempts you to take a stroll on the sands marvelling the beauty of the black waves.

Chowara

Chowara is a small fishing village located around 6 km from Kovalam. On a visit to this little village, one can take a look at the place by foot or gearless motorbikes are also available for the tourists to explore the village.

An Ayyappa temple located on a hill in the village also makes it even more attractive. Every year the temple celebrates a festival that last for 56 days starting from 15th November to 15th January.

Lighthouse Beach

On the southernmost tip of the city of Kovalam, there is the Lighthouse Beach which is one of the most visited attractions in Kovalam. The lighthouse present on a hillock at the beach has given it the name. This lighthouse used to guide ships in olden days.

Today the lighthouse here is still intact, which offers a stunning view of the beach at night when the beams from the lighthouse falls on the waves. Swimmers are welcome to this beach as the water remains calm and warm throughout the year.

Vellayani Lake

The Vellayani Lake is the largest fresh water lake in the district of Thiruvananthapuram. The lake, also known as Vellayani Kayal, is around 6 km from Kovalam. The sight of the fresh water is what attracts the visitors to this scenic spot.

Boat races are conducted at the Vellayani Lake during the time of Onam. If you happen to visit Kovalam around September, there are chances that you can also enjoy watching those boat races which are a pride of Kerala.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Caves

Just a kilometre away from Kovalam is the Vizhinjam rock cut caves which has sculptures cut out of rock. These caves belonged to the eighteenth century and gives a detailed insight to the craftsmanship of the sculptors of those times. However, the caves hadn't gained popularity until recent times.

Shanghumugham Beach

The Shanghumukham Beach is located around 12 km from Kovalam. Apart from the beautiful atmosphere that the beach offers, it also is popular as the place where the presiding deity of the city, Sri Ananthapadmanabhan used to take bath.

The vast stretch of the white sands is a perfect pace to unwind yourself during evenings. The Star Fish Restaurant and Indian Coffee House located at the proximity of the beach are the best places to enjoy food while at the Shanghumukham Beach.

Apart from these beautiful attarctions in Kovalam, there are also a few of the most popular palaces in Thiruvananthapuram which you shouldn't miss during your visit to Kovalam.
