Wetlands are one of the prime ecosystems in the world. There is a dire need for their conservation. The annual event World Wetlands Day 2016 is happening this month.
Ramsar Convention has listed a number of ecological zones as the major wetlands in the World; it has also categorized many such wetlands in India.
Ramsar Convention was a treaty, which was made to conserve the wetlands around the world. The treaty was signed on February 2nd, 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. To mark this day, every year February 2nd is celebrated as World Wetlands Day.
Wetlands are a unique ecosystem; lands or areas which are filled with water permanently or seasonally. There are various types of wetlands: swamps, rivers, lakes, backwaters, marshes, mangroves, etc.
Some eco-sensitive zones are categorized as Ramsar sites in India. Namely, Ashtamudi Lake in Kerala, Bhitarkanika Mangroves in Odisha, Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur, Chilika Lake in Odisha, etc. are some the important as well as popular wetlands in India.
Ashtamudi Lake
Ashtamudi Lake is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kollam, Kerala. This large lake is known for houseboat rides and thrilling boat races of Kerala. Ashtamudi Lake is one among the Ramsar sites which is of International importance in India.
