Thekkady: Awarded World's Top Emerging Destination

Thekkady in Kerala is one of the prominent tourist destinations. Thekkady is located in Idukki district which forms a major part in Kerala tourism.

It is known for the beautiful landscapes, hills and plantations. Recently, Thekkady has been named as the 'World's Top Emerging Destination by PATA'.

Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) CEO Challenge 2015 awarded Thekkady and Albay in Philippines as the emerging destinations.

Periyar Forest

Thekkady which is known for the Periyar National Park, is a major tourist attraction in Idukki. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of a Periyar Lake. The National Park is also declared as a Tiger Reserve and Elephant Reserve.

Murikaddy, Mangala Devi Temple, Periyar Lake, Periyar National Park, Mullaperiyar Dam, Anakkara etc are the popular places to visit in Thekkady.

The famous Munnar is at a distance of 90 km from Thekkady. Tourists can also visit Munnar when they go to Thekkady.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary on the banks of Periyar lake is blessed with the bounty of nature. The forest reserve is heaven for jungle lovers; it is also a protected area which is a home for some endangered animals like tigers, leopards and elephants, etc.

Periyar lake is a scenic beauty; it is formed by the Mullaperiyar dam across the Periyar river. The pristine waters of the Periyar river adds to the rustic charm of the forest.

Mangala Devi Temple is situated on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border near Thekkady. Managaladevi Kannagi Temple is almost 2000 years old and is surrounded by the lush greenery of the forest. The temple is one of the main places to visit in Thekkady.

Murikkady is full of spice and coffee plantations. One gets a picturesque view of the plantations just near to Thekkady.

Chellar Kovil (temple) is around 15 km from Kumily and is known for beautiful waterfalls. It is one of the places situated near Thekkady.

Thekkady, blessed with natural resources makes it a popular destination in Idukki. Surrounded by evergreen forests and Savannah grasslands, Thekkady is one of the leading wildlife destinations in India.
