The Hidden Town in Shivalik Hills - Nahan

By Anusha

Situated in the midst of the Shivalik Hills, the town of Nahan is truly beautiful. This postcard town in Himachal Pradesh is popular for its natural beauty, stunning views, lakes and other attractions found in and around Nahan. Located at an elevation of 932 mt, this scenic town has pleasant climate favoured by all those who reside in warmer regions. However, Nahan is still not as commercial as other tourist destinations in Himachal such as Kullu, Manali and Shimla.

Nahan is the ideal holiday destination if you are looking for a less crowded place to travel, which still offers all that the more popular hill stations such as Manali provide. Take a look at the top 5 places to visit in and around Nahan.

1 Jagannath Temple
The Jagannath Temple is a popular temple attraction in the town of Nahan. Built in the architectural style of the orginal Puri Temple, this structure pays homage to the Hindu god Shiva. The festival of Bawan Dwadshi is celebrated at the end of the monsoon season. During the festival 52 idols of local gods are taken on a procession to the Jagannath Temple and immersed in the tank waters.

2 Renuka Lake
The Renuka Lake, situated in the scenic surroundings of Nahan is the largest lake of Himachal Pradesh and arguably one of the most beautiful as well! Situated at an elevation of 2,134 ft, the lake and surrounding wetland are vital areas for aquatic and bird life. You can take a heavenly dip in the waters at the bathing ghats or take a boat ride. A walk around the area bodering the lake is also recommended.

3 Simbalwara Wildlife Sanctuary
Among the top places to visit in Nahan is the Simbalwara Wildlife Sanctuary. This wildlife hotspot attracts rare species of migratory birds from across the world. Gurgling streams along with sightings of animals like the Sambhar, Chittal and Goral makes this sanctuary an important tourist destination in Nahan.

4 Rajbans (Sirmouri Tal)
An important place to visit in Nahan is the land of treasure hunters! Wondering if you read that right? Rajbans is a forgotten land of ruins, the erstwhile capital has only ruins on display. Long fogotten columns, shrines and idols are scattered about. This place however does attract antique treasure hunters. Maybe you might stuble on something special!

5 Nahan Fort
Located about 15 km from Nahan is the popular fort built by the Sirmour kings and reconstructed by Ranzor Thapa, the Gurkha leader. The old fort is definitely a sight to behold and makes for an interesting tourist attraction in Nahan.

There are many other places of interest in Nahan such as the Nahan Palace and several temples. At short distances of 15-50 km from Nahan are other places you can explore such as Kolar, Rama Dhaun, Kala Amb, Suketi etc.

However do take time to enjoy the town of Nahan, for it is considered to be one of the cleanest and least polluted towns in India. A walk around the town is indeed rewarding!
