Located in the Nilgiri hills, Lovedale is a scenic hill station, which is about 5 km away from Ooty in Tamil Nadu. Lovedale is a perfect alternative to Ooty, which is known as the Queen of the Hill Stations and always tends to get crowded throughout the year.
The peaceful understated charm, stunning scenery and pleasant climate makes it a perfect getaway, especially during the scorching summers. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the popular hill station of Ooty, it is an ideal spot for the newly weds.

Located at altitude of 7200 ft above sea level, the place is a bit lower than the Doddabetta which stands tall at 8000 ft making it the highest peak in the Nilgiri mountain range. The town was founded in the year 1812;the town was the winter escape destination for the British from the heat of the plains below.
Like the other hill stations close by such as Wellington, Yercaud, Coonoor and Ooty which all were discoveries of the British, it still holds to the colonial flavour in the old cottages, bungalows and the churches.

More About The Place
Lovedale gained fame only after the Nilgiri Mountain Railway began its services. The railway is also called as the toy train, the trains connects Ooty to Mettupalayam which is at a distance of approximately 46 km. The trains run partially on the rack and pinion system. The NMR passes through Ooty, Lovedale, Coonor and other hill stations like Wellington, Hillgrove, Runneymede etc.

The hill station is home to the much famed Lawrence School which was established in the year 1858. It is the third Lawrence school in the country apart from the ones at Sanawar and Mount Abu and spreads across a vast area of 750 acres.
The place offers a variety of options for those who are looking for an adrenaline rush apart from enjoying the natural beauty. One can go for a trek to Devashola and the Doddabetta peak which are amongst the popular trekking trails taken by the adventure seekers here.

The Colonial Influence
The Church of Ascension which is located within the campus of Lawrence School is one amongst the must see places here. The 116-year-old church is built in the Gothic style of architecture, and house stained glass panels on the altar which depicts the ascension of Jesus Christ to heaven which is a beautiful piece of art. The church is also home to the great pipe organ which is one amongst the few remaining in the country.

Being located in the Niligiri Moutain Range, Lovedale is around 35 km from the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which is one of the biggest protected areas in the country. The biosphere reserve was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2012 and comprises of the Mudumalai, Bandipur, Nagarhole and Mukurthi National Park apart from the wildlife sanctuaries of Wayanad and Satyamangalam. This beautiful place is less known to the outside world and hence is not very crowded.
The entire place is filled with natural spots which continues to attract more number of visitors, though not as much as Ooty, but yet does not disappoint its visitors who come in search of a quiet time.
