The Essential Guide to Travel in Hampi

Hampi, the cradle of the once mighty Vijayanagara empire is religiously included in the travel itinerary of every traveller who comes down south. The forlorn ruins that lie scattered over a vast landscape tell mute yet enchanting stories of its past. The vast expanse of paddy fields and coconut groves add to the feel of timelessness. Time seems to slow down here and asks the visiting traveller to linger on for a bit more. Maybe to tell you a story or simply tease and tempt you to discover her secrets. Hampi Bazaar

Hampi Bazaar

The Hampi, also known as Virupaksha Bazaar, is the hub of Hampi.  Check out these places to stay nearby. Don't forget to check out the photo gallery of various Hampi sites that were taken by Alexander Greenlaw in 1856. Admission to this gallery is free. One can also take a early morning stroll and see the area come alive. Traffic is restricted to two wheelers only. There are local buses which one can avail to the market.

Matanga Hill

Matanga Hill

Matanga hill is a well known for the beautiful aerial view of the Hampi landscape at the time of sunrise or sunset. Trekking enthusiasts can start from Hampi bazaar and traverseu up to the Achyutaraya temple. The view from the top includes that of the Tungabhadra River, the Kodanda Rama temple, the Veerbhadra temple and the Turthu canal. The hill finds mention in the Ramayana as this was the hiding place for Sugriva, the ruler of Kishkinda.

Vithala Temple

Vithala Temple

An architectural beauty, the Vithala Temple in Hampi is located opposite the village of Anegondi. The name Vithala is derived from an avatar of Vishnu whom the Marathas worshipped. The temple is housed within a complex bound by walls and gateway towers. The Stone Chariot catches one's attention and is one of the most iconic structures here. The pillared halls are carved with sculptures that speak about the glorious past of Hampi. Another feature worth mentioning is that of the musical pillars which ring out the seven notes when tapped.

Hazara Rama Temple

Hazara Rama Temple

The Hazara Rama Temple is located in the middle of the Royal Centre which used to be a place of worship for the royal family members. The temple is renowned for its elaborate frescos portraying the scenes from Hindu mythology. There are carved inscriptions that illustrate the Ramayana and the Mahanavami festival.

Elephant Stables

Elephant Stables

The large dome shaped Elephant Stables were used to house the ceremonial elephants of the royal household. The building has a strong Indo-Islamic influence which can be seen in its domes and arched gateways. It consists of eleven chambers of which ten are crowned with domes. The metal hooks that were used to chain the elephants are seen in the ceilings of some rooms.

Anjenaya Hill

Anjenaya Hill

The Anjenaya Hill is famous for the Hanuman Temple at its peak. One has to climb 572 steps from the base to reach the temple. It is considered to be a highly religious palce as it is believed that it was here that Lord Hanuman was born.

Lotus Mahal

Lotus Mahal

The Lotus Mahal was built as a palace for the queen. The structure is completely constructed out of stone. Islamic influence is to be seen in its arched gateways and vaulted ceilings.

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Not in Hampi but definitely worth a visit, the Daroji Bear Sanctuary is located in the Bellary district, 15 km from Hampi. Estimates show a population of nearly 120 sloth bears, 90 different species of birds and 27 species of butterflies. Daroji bear sanctuary is a must visit for all tourists and the best time of the year to visit the sanctuary is between August and April.
