History of Shakthan Thampuran Palace

Shakthan Thampuran Palace which is also known as Vadakkechira Kovilkam was constructed during the reign of the King Rama Varma Shaktan Thampuran in 1795. This beautiful architecture is one of the top attractions in Thrissur today.

Architecture of Shakthan Thampuran Palace

The design of Shakthan Thampuran Palace is simple and elegant. This two-storied building is constructed with a blend of Kerala and Dutch style of architecture. One can see the traditional Nalukettu framework of the palace. The interiors are spacious with several rooms and tastefully decorated interiors. Every nook and corner of the palace depicts the grandeur of Kochi Kingdom.

Attractions in Shakthan Thampuran Palace

Shaktan Thampuran Palace is now preserved and maintained by the State Archeology Department. It was revamped and converted into a museum in 2005. So, the visitors can explore this palace museum which consists of unique granite and bronze sculptures, coins and currencies used by the Kochi dynasty, inscription plates, utensils of the royal family and antiques belonging to stone age.

Shaktan Thampuran Palace also has a Serpent Grove (shrine for serpent gods) called as Sarpakaavu. There is also a Heritage Garden where you can find many indeginous species of plants and trees.

You can also explore the Archaeological Garden which has the exhibits of the Stone Age which were found around Thrissur.
