A Scenic Road Trip From Bangalore to Munnar

Road trips are one of the thrilling travel ideas! They are the best way to unwind and enjoy the journey. This particular road trip from Bangalore to Munnar is long yet a beautiful one.

You need atleast 4-5 days to cover this road trip. The total distance from Bangalore to Munnar is around 500 km. Since, the path crosses through the ghat sections, it does take time to travel.

There are two popular routes and you can choose your path according to your conveniences.

Route 1: Bangalore- Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri-Avinashi-Udumalaipettai-Munnar
Route 2: Bangalore - Mysore - Masinagudi- Munnar

The 2nd route is a very difficult and a long one. It passes through Bandipur and Mudumalai National Parks. This route has its own risks. The first route is short and the roads are good.

However, in this itinerary we're trying to blend a few routes and cover many places. Our first idea is to reach and cover all the popular tourist places in Munnar. While returning back we'll try another route i.e., from Munnar to Ooty and Ooty to Bangalore. Though this plan sounds a little difficult, you can cover many destinations.

Day 1
Bangalore -Hosur- Dharmapuri - Thoppur Distance: 167km

First decide whether you want to start in the morning or prefer a night journey.

Since we're taking Bangalore - Dharmapuri - Udumalaipettai - Munnar route, you can easily go for a night journey. This route passes through National highway and state highway. Suppose you start at night by 10, you can reach Munnar by morning.

It is better to carry food and water if you start at night. In the day journey, you can stop for breakfast in Adyar Ananda Bhawan between Dharmapuri and Salem road. Or go to A2B in Hosur - Krishnagiri Road!

Moving On: Thoppur - Avinashi

Moving On: Thoppur - Avinashi

Day 1
Distance: Thoppur - Mettur - Bhavani -Avinashi: 146km

You can make pit stops in between as it takes around 3 hours to Avinashi. Avinashi is one of the fast developing suburbs located between Coimbatore and Erode districts.

Avinashiappar Temple is a protected monument and a tourist place. Try visiting this temple, if yours is a day trip.

Reaching Munnar! Avinashi - Munnar

Day 1
Distance: Avinashi - Palladam - Udumalaipettai -Munnar: 158km

Moving from Palladam - Udumalaipettai via Udumalpet road is 50km. You'll hit the ghat section and it takes around 2-3 hours to reach Munnar. Just watch out for road conditions if you're going during monsoons.

Overall distance in this route: 485 km (short distance compared to other routes).When you've started in the morning, make sure you reach Munnar by evening. Better leave Bangalore early in the morning.

Day 2 - 3

The beauty of Munnar is widely known and all the destinations cannot be covered in a day. You need atleast 2 days to cover all the popular tourist places in Munnar.

Either you can end your road trip in Munnar and cover the hill station fully or continue to visit other places on your way back to Bangalore.

Munnar has many hotels and resorts where you can stay. Cover some of the important places in one day and head to your next destination,Ooty!

Day 4
Distance: Munnar - Ooty via Udumalpet Road: 240km

It takes around 6 - 7 hours to travel from Munnar to Ooty. So leave Munnar early and reach Ooty for a night's stay.

Cover the places around and halt for another night. Next morning leave early by 6 and return to Bangalore.

Day 5
Distance: Ooty - Bangalore via NH209 : 280km

Ooty - Bangalore has many routes. One passes through Masinagudi and Bandipur.

Again you need almost 7 hours to drive back home! The Masinagudi and Bandipur Route will have restrictions. Vehicles are not allowed from 6pm - 6 am. If you have plans to cover the Bandipur or Masinagudi, better reach before 6 pm.
