Ramzan 2016 Special: Top 5 Mosques In India

Ramzan (or Ramadan) is a month when Muslims observe fasts throughout the day, and indulge themselves in prayers and noble activities. Prayers are held in mosques during evenings called 'taraweeh' and the whole day is generally spent in religious activities and reading of Islamic scripts.

Let's visit some of the best mosques in India that one ought to visit during the month of Ramzan.

1. Jama Masjid, Delhi

Jama Masjid in Delhi is one of the largest mosques in India. Located near Red Fort, this mosque is believed to be one of the last works by emperor Shah Jahan. The masjid, originally called as Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa was built in red sandstone and white marble by about 5000 workers. The courtyard of the mosque can occupy around 25, 000 people at a time.

The mosque has 3 gateways, two minarets and 4 towers. The minarets have 5 storeys, each filled with intricate carvings and calligraphy. The floor of the mosque is covered with black and white ornamented marble, that gives it a look similar to that of a prayer mat.

2. Dargah Sharif, Ajmer

Dargah sharif is a sufi shrine, the shrine of a sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti. It is also one of the most visited mosques in India. It is believed that whoever visits this dargah and pray with pure faith would free their souls. The Mughal architecture of those times are evident in the architecture of the dargah.

Millions of devotees visit this dargah to know more about the saint's life and to get his blessings. It takes around 3 hours' drive from Jaipur.

3. Bara Imambara, Lucknow

This is one of the religious places for Islam, and also often visited for Ramzan and Muharram. The monumernt was built as a part of a relief project. The then emperor of Awadh, Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula had appointed the best of architects to build a prayer hall for the city of Lucknow, which was the capital of Awadh, thus fighting unemployment of the rich and poor alike.

The construction of the prayer hall and the famine lasted for 11 years, making the structure one of the best of its times. Around 20, 000 employees were hired, ensuring that no potential worker was left unemployed.

4. Taj-ul Masjid in Bhopal

This is the largest mosque in India. The name Taj-ul-Masjid translates as "Crown among mosques". The pink coloured structure has huge 18 storey high minarets on either sides, with marble domes. The floor resembles that of the Jama Masid in Delhi, and the main hallway has many beautifully constructed pillars.

5. Hazratbal Masjid, Srinagar

This is one of the most religious places of Islam. The stunning white marble structure has a lake adjoining to it. It is believed that the mosque has the hair of prophet Muhammad. On major religious occasions, this is also displayed to the public.
