Wokha, a district headquarters in Nagaland, is inhabited by the Lothas, one of the largest tribes in Nagaland. For the most part of history, this place remained isolated from the outer world.

Wokha is surrounded by several hills and ridges which make it scenic hotspot of tourism. It is surrounded by Mokokchung district on its north, Zunheboto in the east and Assam in the west.

The town is known for its shawls, which are handmade using a technique which has been passed down through generations. Some of the tourist spots in Wokha include Mount Tiyi, Totsu Cliff and the Doyang River.
It is important to note that Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit to enter the State of Nagaland. It is a simple travel document which can be obtained from Nagaland House in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati or Shillong. Tourists can also apply for this permit to the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung.

How to Reach Wokha

By Air: The town of Wokha has no airport of its own, and the Dimapur Airport serves as a gateway to this place. The airport is located at a distance of 162 km. You can avail daily flights from Kolkata and Guwahati to this airport.

By Train: Wokha has no railhead, and if you are planning to reach there by train, Dimapur Railway Station will be the ideal place for you to disembark. It is located at a distance of 130 km from the town and connected by daily trains to New Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata and other important places in the country.

By Road: The town mainly relies on road communication with the NH-39 connecting it to Dimapur, which is a major gateway to this place. Another way to reach this place is from the state capital Kohima, which is 75 km from this place. Nagaland State Transport buses and shuttle services are easily available from both these places.

Doyang River

Doyang River is one of the largest and most prominent rivers in Nagaland, which flows through the Wokha district. Also known as the Dzu or Dzulu by the local tribes, it is one of the major sources of water for the people here. The river valley has some impressive locales which are ideal for nature lovers and photographers.

Doyang Hydro Project

The Doyang Hydro Project is a popular tourist spot in Wokha. This hydropower project which is constructed over the Doyang River has become famous for some of the breathtaking views that it offers. It is located 38 km from the town of Wokha. You can get a clear view of the dam from the hilltop of some villages of Wokha. If you are seeking an adrenalin rush, then embark on a trek to the reservoir from the hill top through some dense forest cover. On the way, you might catch a glimpse of wildlife and nature.

Mount Tiyi

Located at an altitude of 1,969 mt above sea-level, Mount Tiyi is a must visit place in Wokha. Local legends state that there was once an orchard in this peak, which could only be seen by those who were lucky. The Lothas, Semas and Aos tribes also believe that this is the resting place of their ancestors' souls. The peak offers a panoramic view of the villages, and the valley below which is like a beautifully painted canvas.When here, you must make it a point to watch the sunset atop this peak. It is an excellent place for adventurous activities such as trekking and rock climbing. Many tourists come here to enjoy rock climbing during the summer months when the rocks are dry.

Totsu Cliff

Another place to visit in Wokha is Mount Totsu and the cliff alongside it which is situated at an altitude of 1,250 mt above the sea level. It offers a breathtaking view of the valley below. It is an ideal place for adventure addicts, who can go trekking and rock climbing here. There are small lakes and waterbodies at the foothill of the mountain, which serves as an ideal picnic spot.
