The Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya is a place of pristine beauty. The undulating hills with its many rivers is like a beautiful painting on canvas. Far from civilisation, parts of these hills still remain unexplored and that is the beauty of Jaintia Hills.

It attracts nature lovers and photographers who find this place to be a haven for themselves, with the natural surroundings and scenic views all around them. It is also a place frequented by trekkers who trek through these densely populated hills in search of adventure.

Some of the tourist places of interest in the Jaintia Hills include; the Dawki, Ialong Park, Kiang Nongbah Monument, Krang Suri Falls, Thadlaskein Lake, Tyrshi Falls, Umhang Lake and many more exciting places.

How to Reach Jaintia Hills

By Air: The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati is the nearest airport to Jaintia Hills and is located at a distance of 240 km. It is connected to the major cities in India.

By Train: Meghalaya does not have any railway station in the state, the Guwahati railway station is the nearest, at a distance of 240 km. This station is well connected to all the major cities in the country.

By Road: NH-44 that connects Shillong to parts of Tripura and Assam passes through the Jaintia Hills. It thus serves as a lifeline to all the attractions of the two districts. Tourists will find easy transport from Shillong to all parts of Jaintia Hills. Local bus services as well as taxis are easily available.

Dawki

Dawki

One of the places to visit in the Jaintia Hills is the small town of Dawki, which lies in the Indo-Bangladesh border. The Umngot river which flows through here is a major hub for many sports activities of which the most prominent one is the annual boat race that takes place here. Tourists come here to enjoy the peacefulness that surrounds this lake, and it is a great place to head out for a picnic with your family.

Ialong Park

Ialong Park

Another place of interest in the Jaintia Hills is the Ialong Park, which overlooks the scenic Pynthowah Valley. It is a hotspot for nature lovers, as a large variety of flowers are found here. It is a perfect spot for a picnic. You can also sit on the slopes of the park and enjoy the view of the sun going down.

Kiang Nongbah Monument

Kiang Nongbah Monument

The Kiang Nongbah Monument is a famous tourist spot in the Jaintia Hills, which was built in honour of U Kiang Nongbah, who died a martyr to free these lands from the British. The monument is built in the center of the vast field of Madiah Kmai Blai, where the hero is said to have taken his oath to fight the British. People come in from far and wide to pay respect to the hero who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his people and his land.

Krang Suri Falls

Krang Suri Falls

A place of interest in the Jaintia Hills is the Krang Suri Falls. It is one of the most beautiful falls in the region and is surrounded by big rocks and dense vegetation. It is an ideal place to take a cool dip and relax in the arms of nature. The falls are at its best during the monsoons but it's advisable to not go swimming in the pool below the falls during the monsoon season.

Nartiang

Nartiang

Nartiang, the summer capital of the Jaintia kings, is a tourist spot in the Jaintia Hills, which is known for its history and culture. There is a temple here dedicated to Goddess Durga where you can see the age-old idols, altar and swords which adorn the Goddess. There is a rock monolith garden here, which attracts tourists in large numbers. These wonderous monoliths are certainly awe-inspiring.

Thadlaskein Lake

Thadlaskein Lake

Thadlaskein Lake is a popular picnic spot in the Jaintia Hills. This beautiful lake is surrounded by meadows and is connected to River Myntdu, making it a breathtaking location. You can see several varieties of rare orchids here. Activities like boating are available, and it is ideal for an outing with your family.

Tyrshi Falls

Tyrshi Falls

Among the lesser known places of interest in the Jaintia Hills is the Tyrshi Falls, which is located along the Jowai-Shillong Road. The water gushes down the falls like a beautiful veil and is certainly a picturesque view. It is a haven for nature lovers as the fall is surrounded by dense forests. Also, you get a panoramic view of the area from the top of the falls.

Umhang Lake

Umhang Lake

Umhang Lake, which is situated in the village of Batow in the Jaintia hills is another scenic place which attracts tourists in large numbers. The beautiful and calm lake is surrounded by forests thus making it an ideal picnic spot.

Umlawan Cave

Umlawan Cave

Another tourist spot in Jaintia Hills is the Umlawan Cave, which is an ideal place for adventure seekers. This cave is believed to be the longest ad deepest cave in the sub-continent and attracts many adventurers who set out to explore its depth. The cave is joined by the Umskor cave and the Kot-Sai, which makes the length of the cave a total of 21 km. The cave is generously embellished with the stalactite and the stalagmite formations.
