Travel to the Oil City of Assam, Digboi

One of the places to visit in Assam is the town of Digboi, known for having the oldest oil refinery in India. In fact when the English discovered the oil fields they got hold of a young local lad and made them dig for the oil. These English men were known to keep shouting at the 'dig boy' and thus the town was named Digboi.

Though it has very few attractions, the town is covered in the beauty of nature and is a place perfect for relaxing and rejuvenating. Tourists come here to explore the tea gardens and also the many hills and forests around the town. Here is a guide to the places you can visit in Digboi.

War Cemetery

One of the places to visit in Digboi is its War Cemetery, built to honour the soldiers who died during the Second World War. There are nearly 200 burials here, and it is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Tourists coming here can pay respects to these soldiers of valour.

Ridge Point

A tourist place to visit in Digboi is the Ridge Point that gives a breathtaking view of the city. Tourists coming here can also view the snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Himalayas. It is a perfect place to head to for relaxing. The place is also ideal for a family picnic.

Digboi Oil Centenary Museum

Another place to visit in Digboi is the Digboi Oil Centenary Museum, which shows that the first traces of oil were found in Assam. The oil refinery here was the first of its kind in India. The Discovery Well was the first commercially viable oil well in India is located close to this museum. Tourists coming here can browse through the many equipments that were used then to drill the oil out and also take a peek into the Discovery Well.

Margherita

Another tourist place to visit in Digboi is the small village of Margherita, also known as the Coal Queen of Assam. The town is famous for its tea plantations and coal mines. The entire establishment of this coal mine here was done by an Italian engineer, Robert Paganini and he named this town in honour of the then Italian Queen Margherita. Tourists coming here can walk through the tea gardens and smell the beautiful aroma of roasted tea here or explore the coal mines.

How to Reach Digboi

By Air: The Dibrugarh Airport is the nearest airhead to Digboi. The airport is about 80 km from Digboi and is well-connected to the rest of the country via direct flights to Guwahati, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore.

By Train: The nearest railway station to Digboi is in Tinsukia located at an approximate distance of 40 km. Regular trains to Guwahati are available from Tinsukia.

By Road: The NH-38 runs across the town of Digboi and connects it to all the major towns and cities of Assam. A/C and non-A/C buses ply on this route and are very comfortable for travel. Tourist cabs can also be booked to Digboi.
