These rock formations are found in a village called Orvakal or Orvakkalu in the outskirts of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. Though Orvakal is a small village, it is famous for its rock formations. Hence, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department has constructed a park around it.

Orvakal is not just a tourist place but also a famous film shooting spot for Telugu films. Several scenes from the recent super hit 'Baahubali' has been shot here.

What makes this place an interesting visit?

The rock formations in Orvakal is said to resemble the Igneous style of stone structures. Igneous is a word derived from Latin which means fire.

The layered pattern indicates the volcanic eruptions. Hence, it is suggested that they were created from the volcanic lava.

Silica and Quartz are the prime components found in these rocks. These are the two main ingredients used in manufacturing glass. Picturesque rocks amidst the water look even more attractive.

A cafeteria is located in this area which is helpful for the visitors. Tourists can also enjoy boating in the waters around the rock formations. A cave museum is also one of the main attractions at Orvakal.

Interestingly, palaeolithic rock paintings are also found here. It has been an alluring factor for the archaeologists for many years.

Orvakal is around 22km from the city of Kurnool. It is easily accessible by road.

  • By Bus: Bus Services from Kurnool are there to travel to Orvakallu.
  • By Train: Kurnool Railway Station is the nearest Railway Station to Orvakal. Another rail route is to get down in Bellary Railway Junction and from there it is 164km to Orvakal.
  • It is around 215 km from Hyderabad to Kurnool
