Myths of Ecotourism

By Shruthi

Nature and Culture are of priority to Ecotourists all over the world. The primary purpose of Ecotourism is to create a more aware and sensitive set of individuals travelling the world. We are familiar with the do's and dont's of being a good ecotourist. However, the idea is often misinterpreted and many myths surrounding the concept has made it difficult for ecotourism to flourish in India. Here's an effort to break them...

Myths of Ecotourism

Ecotourism is Elitist
The common perception about ecotourism is that it is cutom-made for the elite class while the reality is that ecotourism is for the common man to become an aware tourist. There's also a drift in India that suggests it is a package for foreigners. Which is absolutely false.

Ecotourism is Expensive
The idea of ecotourism is to reach out to the roots of civilisation. Meeting the locals and taking a dip in local flavours is the most cost-effective way of travel and at the same time, it is the most enriching travel experience ever. Although ecotourism IS expensive right now in India, hopefully this trend will decline for the better in the future.

Ecotourism is the Sacrifice of Luxury
Most of the eco-hotels in the country are some of the most luxurious ones. Unless and until you opt out of it, there's no compromise on luxury.

Ecotourism means Volunteering
Ecotourism does create a green environment but it doesn't mean you plant trees on your vacation. However, yes, you won't be throwing plastic and other used items all over the place.

Ecotourism is for Adults
The earlier you start, the better it is. If a clean concept like ecotourism is put in the system of young minds, we are assured to have a greener world. In fact it is kids who enjoy the most on an eco-tour.

Ecotourism is no Fun
Ecotourism makes a responsible traveller and at the same time gives you enough relaxation on your vacation. It provides fun in the most green and innocent way possible. The experience is sure to be fresh and rejuvenating.
