Medak, The Town of Festivity

Medak is a municipal town in the state of Telangana and lies at a distance of about 100 km from the capital city of Hyderabad. It has a very interesting history associated with it. The town was at the height of progress during the reign of Kakatiya dynasty. The Kakatiya king built a citadel around Medak to protect the town from any sort of invasion. This citadel was constructed over a hillock and was named Methukurdurgam. It was also popularly referred to as Methukuseema by the locals. ‘Methuku' is a Telugu word that means cooked grains of rice.

Medak is a place to visit for tourists as many festivals are celebrated here with a lot of pomp and show. In fact, all the festivals of Telangana are celebrated in this region, and people come from far and wide to participate in the festivities. The most famous festival in the town is the festival of Bathukamma which is celebrated on a large scale here.

There are many tourist places in Medak; namely the Edupayala Durga Bhavani Gudi, Medak Fort, Papikondalu, Pocharam Sanctuary and more.

How to Reach Medak

By Air: The airport nearest to Medak is the Hyderabad International Airport (100 km) from the town of Medak. It is well connected to other major cities.

By Train: There is no railway station at Medak. The nearest railway station is 60 km away in the town of Kamareddy. The railway station here is well-connected to the major cities of Andhra Pradesh including Hyderabad, Vizag, Karimnagar and Secunderabad.

By Road: The state government runs buses from major towns and cities to Medak. Buses are also available from Maharashtra and Karnataka to Medak. Hyderabad and Vizag also run deluxe and Volvo buses to Medak, but these can be a little expensive. The roads are in good condition, so the journey is comfortable.

Edupayala Durga Bhavani Gudi

Edupayala Durga Bhavani Gudi

Edupayala Durga Bhavani Gudi is a shrine dedicated to the goddess Durga Bhavani and is one of the tourist places in Medak. The place is best known not only for the shrine of Goddess Durga, but also for its natural and unique formation of stones. It is here where the river Manjeera divides itself into seven streams which later on reunite at a different spot.

Medak Fort

Medak Fort

Another place to visit in Medak is the Medak Fort, which is an ancient citadel that was built by the Kakatiyan rulers to protect the city from invaders. The fort is said to have been built in the 12th century by Maharaja Pratap Rudra. This fort is often referred to as the Methuku Durgam. The fort is known to house a 3.2 mt canon which apparently belongs to the 17th century. Visitors coming here get a picturesque view of the whole town from the fort.

Papikondalu

Papikondalu

Papikondalu or the Papi Hills is another popular tourist spot in Medak. These mountain ranges were initially known as Papidi Kondalu, which in Telugu means partition. It was so named as it created a partition in the River Godavari. There is a waterfall here which attracts a lot of tourists and nature lovers here. This place houses a tribal clan who by nature are peaceful. A wildlife sanctuary exists here and houses a variety of birds and animals. You may catch a glimse of tigers, panthers, antelopes, hyenas, jackals and spotted deers here.

Medak church

Medak church

A must visit place in Medak is the Medak Church. This church was built by the Methodist Christians of India and was established in the year 1924. The architectural design of the church is in Gothic Revival style and is said to accommodate nearly 5,000 people. Visitors are left in awe when they come here and see the stained glass windows of the church depicting Nativity, Crucifixion and Ascension from the life of Jesus Christ. Tourists can spend time here in the beauty of this church and also for spiritual purposes.

Pocharam Sanctuary

Pocharam Sanctuary

Pocharam Sanctuary is a popular tourist place in Medak. This sanctuary once served as the hunting grounds for the Nizams of Hyderabad. The sanctuary derives its name from the Pocharam Lake that was built here when the Allair dam was constructed. It houses many wild animals namely wild dogs, wolf, leopard, forest cat, chital and more. It also is visited by a few migratory birds like open Billed stork, Bar-headed goose and Brahminy ducks each year.
